August 18, 2003Dean gets Hispanic Congressional EndorsementBy Byron LaMastersI've written before that Howard Dean has had a little bit of trouble winning over minority voters. Dean's base is considered to be "gay and lesbian voters, urban and surburban NPR liberal whites, some environmentalists, etc". So far, he's been acceptable to most Black and Hispanic leaders, but has yet to be embraced by them. Needless to say, this makes me happy.
Grijalva has a strong following in his Arizona district. He won by a heavy margin in a tough primary against a very well funded EMILY's List candidate (if I remember correctly). A lot of endorsements are relatively meaningless, but I think that getting a high profile Hispanic endorsement in the first primary with a large Hispanic population is a big help for Dean. Damn I should have got that quote copyrighted. Good endorsement for Dean. But he needs Rep. Ed Pastor D-Phoenix endorsment for Arizona. I figure Pastor would be a Gephardt guy if he hasn't endorsed already. I follow Arizona politics almost as close as Texas. Btw you didn't mention that Grijalva is one of the most liberal members of the house Democrats. Posted by: Erin at August 18, 2003 03:04 PMThe first commenter had it half right. Grijalva is one of Congress's most liberal members in the newly created ultra-safe Democratic District. Why is his endorsement any different because he's hispanic? Sure, he's low on the totem poll. But considering that Arizona is a state with an early primary, and considering that there are only two Democratic Congressmen in Arizona, I found the endorsement significant, because clearly having won a tough primary in 2002, Grijalva has a following and his support means a lot to Dean for that reason and also symbolically, as Dean has had some trouble getting widespread support from minorities so far. Byron, I am just saying his endorsement shouldn't be a surprise. I have to agree with Josh. If Ed Pastor came out for Dean, or even a Udall relative, I would take notice.
