January 14, 2006You're so vain, I bet you think this post is about you (Rick perry).By Matt HardigreeI just put together a post for Chris Bell on Perry's laughable new "Proud of Texas" campaign. In the spirit of cross-posting and drawing visitors to the Chris Bell blog, here's a taste: A smart lady once said that there is a difference between pride and vanity, pride is what we think of ourselves and vanity is what we'd like others to think of us. There is a lot for the Governor of Texas to be proud of, but it's vanity that makes him want us to believe that he has anything to do with it. More here. Well said, Matt. Posted by: Phillip Martin at January 14, 2006 04:01 PMWow your blog post was a bunch of fluff. I would mutch rather have heard what your plant had to say than your collection of pointless criticism. When will you and the others like you start suggesting a way for Mr. Bell, or Mr. Gammage to appeal to real Texas voters. Mr. Bell is the 4th most popular person in this race. Mr. Gammage the 5th, or 6th (behind my favorite teacher in Ft. Worth). Unless you can raise money for either of these guys, and fast, they are dead in the water. But hey, at least you have good grammer. Posted by: Dean at January 14, 2006 04:28 PMHey dean it's grammar not "grammer," and telling someone they have good grammar is a fairly weak criticism. But you want to know why Chris Bell is going to appeal to voters? Why he's going to win the primary? (when people start hearing about him). It's education stupid. Every parent with kids in public schools knows that teaching to a test is a bad way to run an education system. Chris Bell has stood up and said he's going to help make our schools the best in ten years. That is going to appeal to people. I direct you to how this way: http://www.chrisbell.com/insights/102105_enron Also, not being a dbag will probably help. Posted by: matth at January 14, 2006 09:33 PMI love your BLOG! Its great! Posted by: Andrew at January 15, 2006 01:56 AMHow many days of refraining from pot smoking will it take for Matt to realize that the governor is the chief executive of the state. Of course Perry will claim credit for economic successes. Between Perry and Chrissy Bell, Perry at least has something to show. Bell's tired old line of "Tom Delay is evil" shows nothing as to what Bell will do to vitalize the Texas economy. Same goes to the past Democratic gubernatorial candidates who haven't won here in Texas since 1994. Posted by: Trey at January 15, 2006 03:10 AMMatt...since you obviously have some sort of "in" at the Chris Bell campaign, perhaps you could explain why my very respectful comment/query was taken down after being posted for about an hour. In my comment,I asked why Chris found it necessary to try to "Swift Boat" a fellow Democrat with a controversial thirty year old vote to make it appear that Bob Gammage was anti-choice and how I expected Chris to be better than that. What possible explanation could there be for removing my comment other than pure ole censorship? Gammage is not against abortion rights and he has always supported a woman's right to choose.... it's very deceptive of Chris to promote that kind of nasty campaign tactic. I believe he owes Bob Gammage an apology Posted by: Citizen at January 15, 2006 04:12 AM"What possible explanation could there be for removing my comment other than pure ole censorship?" It's not censorship. It's just keeping everything light and gay. Everything about the Chris Bell Campaign is supposed to be light and gay. He will be our light and gay governor. Or is that Republican light? Posted by: Baby Snooks at January 15, 2006 11:04 AMSnooks... Hey...John Sharp is anti-choice, right? I wonder what Chris has to say about that! Citizen Posted by: Citizen at January 15, 2006 11:34 AM"Thought it was Rick Perry who was light and gay. :>" According to published rumors anyway. First reported here as I recall. Wonder who the source was? Posted by: Baby Snooks at January 15, 2006 01:45 PMIn response to Trey, who must think that anyone who doesn't support Perry is a pot somker, I have to disagree that most of our problems can't be traced back to Perry. He cut CHIPs funding, he opposed a voting regent, passed tuition dereg and led the TCEQ to weaken their enforcement of environmental laws. We may have a weak governor system, but our governor can still have a great positive or negative effect on our state. Is Bell going to come into office and suddenly fix everything? No. But at least he has the balls to step up and say that, if we elect him, he's going to work with parents, educators and legislators to make our schools the best in ten years. Rick Perry, if he continues on the same path, can't even promise we'll have schools in ten years. Bell doesn't have all the answers. No one does. But as someone with a degree in geography who has spent time working at the Lege, I'll pass on some wisdom: in governing, as in navigation, knowing where you want to go is just as important as knowing how to get there. In my opinion, Bell has the boldest vision of where to go. Posted by: matth at January 15, 2006 03:12 PMOh how I've missed the Hardigree insight! Just so you know, I'm proud of Texas, how 'bout you, mofo? Posted by: abbyliv at January 15, 2006 10:38 PMMatt, let's face it..you're a Bell apologist, you're awash in the Austin culture, and I wouldn't be surprised to learn that your dresser drawers are stuffed with tye-dye t-shirts. "Rick Perry, if he continues on the same path, can't even promise we'll have schools in ten years." Yes of course Chris Bell, or MLK II to Matt, will be able to steer the 2007 legislative session toward success with a Republican Speaker and Republican Lt. Governor. Mr. Bell will use his clear vision to convince Speaker Craddick to oppose the powerful oil and gas and business lobbies that have so far had their way in preventing the reform of Texas business taxes. Meanwhile, Mr. Perry, if re-elected, won't even continue the public school system in ten years. Just wanted to clarify your point Karl Rove. Posted by: Dean at January 16, 2006 08:09 AMSorry Trey, Houston (www.houstonist.com) is more my speed and tye-dye hasn't been popular in Austin for the last twenty years. Maybe it's still the thing in Nach. As for Dean & Trey. What I don't think you all understand, and Chris has been saying this, is it is going to take more than taxing soda, closing a few business loop holes, et cetera, to fix Texas school. It's not just funding, we've got serious issues in teacher retention. We're DEAD LAST in our graduation rate and second to last in SAT scores. We're teaching to a test that has no bearing on the future of our kids and our textbooks are put through a political approval process. The reason why Perry and others aren't successful is that they're trying to put a band-aid on a flesh wound. They won't aknowledge the real problem. Chris is talking about a serious reform that has textbooks approved or disapproved by educators, that diminishes the importance of this one stupid test and addresses the serious issues of student and teacher retention. I joke about not having schools under Perry because under him we lose teacher and students at faster rates than almost any other state. Posted by: matth at January 16, 2006 08:51 AM"Chris (Bell) is talking about a serious reform that has textbooks approved or disapproved by educators, that diminishes the importance of this one stupid test and addresses the serious issues of student and teacher retention." And that reform is .....??? Astronomical tax hikes? Every school gets the same dollar amount of funding? Creative math and creative spelling? Applied basketweaving classes? Details would be really nice, Matt. Like they say, alot of content, but no substance. Posted by: Trey at January 16, 2006 03:54 PMToo bad Chris Bell wont say those things on the stump! Posted by: hamiltonfan at January 17, 2006 11:12 AMWho knows...maybe 'ol Sour Grapes Bell will say anything just to get his standing above fourth place in the polls -- such as "free Dell computers for every student and staff member -- including the school bus drivers and cafeteria cooks" or "a $25 Wal-Mart gift card with the purchase of a new TollTag"...
