HD-143 Special Election

By Karl-Thomas Musselman

DC9 gives us some interesting graphics on the Nov 8th special election to replace the late Joe Moreno in the Texas House. It's a Democratic district, but the big challenge seems to be if Moreno family endorsed candidate Ana Hernandez can avoice a run-off in the field of six. The closest challengers would be Al Flores (R- according to the HCDP) and Laura Salinas.

There's not much noise being made about the race as far as I've seen, unless of course you are reading Salinas's consultant Marc Campos's Daily Yammering. But DC9 gives us those fundraising numbers which show that Hernandez leads in fundraising and cash on hand, something that Salinas has none of which isn't the best place to be in this type of election.

Anyone hearing anything from out in the district?

Hey now, KT, I read Marc's Daily Commentary!!!

I'm completely neutral, fwiw, on that race. If I lived in D. 143, I'd vote for "the hot one."

I live in the district. I have been innundated with mailings from Campos and his candidate. I don't understand why the girl is even being considered as plausible. She has absolutely NO experience-personally or professionally. I can't for the life of me figure out whey people are even taking the time to discuss her candidacy other than the fact that she has Campos backing her, which doesn't come cheap.

I think it's an insult to Ana Hernandez for people to compare Salinas to her. There are NOT two highly qualified examples of Latinas running in this race-there is only one. And she is not an unwed teen mother. Instead, she chose to make the right choices and go to school and dedicate herself to community service--this is what makes a role model, not simply correcting errors in judgement.

I also live in the district of 143 and I am also receiving mailers of all the candidates. Even though Marc Campos and his candidate Laura Salinas are sending out more mailers, I think it's very smart on her part. I know I read each piece of information so that I can pick which candidate I am going to vote for. Those mailers help many people who are confused. So she IS smart for doing that. If you take the time to READ her mailers, you will find out that she is experienced personally and professionally. If you even took the time to speak to her, she'd blow you away at her passion for this position. I just spoke to her a few times that she has passed my house to speaks to her fellow neighbors of the district. I have spoken to all of the candidates and they are ALL professional. Don't be ignorant and judge so quickly. These are all Hispanic candidates trying to do the best they can for our community. Let the voters do the picking and let's not judge our own community.

Only one candidate has the legislative experience working for this District - Ana Hernandez. Another candidate has taken $15K from the people who have brought you tort reform and Prop 12 - Laura Salinas. Would you really trust her to stand with the Democrats on a close vote when Craddick and Texans for Lawsuit Reform have financed half of her campaign??
We don't need Al Edwards, Sylvester Turner or Vilma Luna in a tight pink skirt on the House floor.

Well said Marie! Too bad only a few in the district are aware of such info. Her uncle Roman and Craddick are old pals-in fact Roman went to visit Craddick back in May as they pleaded for the special election to be held back in May.

It saddens me that people in our district can actually view Salinas as representation that we could actually be proud of in Austin. She is a part-time secretary with only college student government experience. Why voters would even consider this equivalent to Ana Hernandez is beyond me.

And FYI Jen, I have read her mailers and I have known her personally for a number of years-which I feel leaves me in quite the informed position when it comes to decision making-I can attest to the fact that she is nothing more than a greedy opportunist that can sell her self to almost anyone. So let's not confuse informed decision making with ignorance. Jen, may I ask what personal experience and professional experience you believe she has that make her qualified to be a law maker? I hope it isn't that part time secretary position or the student regent position she is boasting about. FYI, student regents at UH have no actual voting power, they get to sit in meetings-and SGA elections have lower turnout than 143-so lets not call that "experience"

Okay, wait a second. Bob Perry funded the Swift Boat Veterans, Tom Delay, the tort reform groups, and the other George Bush Republican hacks. The Salinas camp now has taken $65,000 from Perry and his groups. The Hernandez camp has taken $10,000. And these are the Democratic candidates in a Democratic district? It's no wonder Democrats are in the minority. Are there any Democratic leaders left in this State?

OK, WAS LAURA SALINAS AN EXOTIC DANCER? THIS IS INSANE? I CAN'T BELIEVE A SINGLE MOM EX STRIPPER WOULD RUN FOR SUCH A CONTESTED OFFICE. DOES ANYONE KNOW WHERE THIS MAILER CAME FROM OR HAVE A COPY OF IT...THE BUZZ HAS BEEN NON STOP BUT I'VE YET TO SEE THE ACTUAL LETTER.
