Hays County Dems LBJ Birthday Picnic

By Damon McCullar

Well, I just got back from The Salt Lick. Man am I stuffed. I've not eaten so good since the last time I was there for Katie's B-day party.

The Hays County Dems LBJ Picnic has been going on for over 17 years. Today's crowd was about 200 folks. Among the speakers were Gary Mauro, former Land Commissioner and 1998 candidate for Governor; Chris Bell, current candidate for Governor; Glen Maxey, former Texas Rep and campaign manager for No Nonsense in November. The State Chairman, Charles Soechting welcomed everyone to the event. He told us of how Hays county was the top performing county in getting the most Democrats to the polls and how they won 5 out of 6 contested seats in Hays county in the 2004 election.

Cactus Pryor, formerly of KLBJ regaled us with stories of an era past. He told us several antedotes of his years working with the Johnson family, all of them humorous.

Then there was the food! If you haven't eaten at The Salt Lick, you've not had great BBQ. I recommend it to everyone before they leave Texas.

Then came the candidates. We heard from John Courage, Diane Henson, Judge Jim Coronado, and Mina Brees. All of the last three are running for the Texas Court of Appeals.

The most interesting thing I saw there was the battle for CD 28. Henry Cuellar has three primary oppoents. They include Richard Raymond of the 42nd District, and former Congressman Ciro Rodriguez . I hadn't been paying attention in CD 28 but looks like there will be a highly contested race in that district. Look for these individuals to be added to my growing list of candidates for 2006 next week.

Finally, I found out that the San Marcos Area Democrats have just launched a site at www.smad.org. The host of the party, Hays County Democrats has a web site at www.hayscountydemocrats.org. The Democrats in Wimberly boast the largest Democratic group in Hays county and you can find them at www.wimdems.org.

Oscar Sanchez?

Who is this guy? please if anyone knows more info... spill it please.

Posted by: Zapata at August 28, 2005 08:58 PM

If we elect our governors in even years than how was Gary Mauro a candidate for governor in 1999?

It rather was 1998 when GW Bush got 68 percent of the vote against Mauro in almost every county in Texas including most of the state's Hispanic state reprsentative districts.

Thanks for the heads up Mr. Levine. That is fixed. As for Mr. Sanchez, I gave his campaign manager my card and I will post more on him as I learn it. His campaign manager had just started this week.

That Dallas Morning News story lists Oscar Sanchez as the campaign manager for Rodriguez. Is the story wrong? Or are there two of them, one campaigning for Rodriguez, and the other one running for the seat?

Posted by: Julieta Windom at August 29, 2005 06:25 AM

Julieta,

I think I will defer to the MSM in this case. There were were a lot of folks there and and things were a bit confusing. I met Mr. Sanchez as I was dashing to the food line. The program was already about 45mins late and I was starved. I met the Hon. Mr. Rodriguez as I was going into the serving area and he had a gentleman with him (Not Oscar Sanchez) helping him pass out literature. Like I mentioned, I've been asleep at the wheel when it comes to the CD 28 race and had no idea that it was as contested as it is. I walked away with the impression that it was a 4 way race, but I could be wrong. I introduced myself to all the candidates and gave them all my information. Maybe they can shed some light on the situation.

Posted by: Damon C at August 29, 2005 06:36 AM

You'll "defer" to the MSM on this one? The MSM got it right and you got it flat wrong. There is no further need to "shed some light on the situation." Why not just admit you screwed up and not make matters worse with insulting excuses about food lines and programs running 45 minutes late?

Posted by: Cafe Tortoli at August 29, 2005 08:14 AM

Fine, I was wrong. There's certainly no reason to be rude about it.

Posted by: Damon C at August 29, 2005 09:23 AM

Yeah, Damon, we're not paying you to ... wait, we're NOT paying you!

Posted by: Marie at August 29, 2005 12:50 PM

Well, since being precise matters to you Mr. Burt, please note Mauro spells his first name
G A R R Y.

And always has.

As LBJ Birthday Party's go this was one of the bestever! For those of you outside Hays County, we in Hays County have a special relationship with LBJ as he attended and in many ways helped run Southwest Texas in the late 1920's. Our LBJ Party, is put on by the Hays County Democratic Party. County Chair Gloria Whitehead did a great job, great entertainment, food and great conversation. Demcorats from everywhere are not only welcome but encouraged to come and see why Hays County continues to improve its numbers and why it led the State last year in improved numbers. It's the beer and barbeque. I particularly enjoyed the fact that there was real conversation amongst the candidates in Congressional District 28. I live in 28 (well this year, but am building in 21 and I would sure like to see my area represented by a Democrat who will work to see Democrats elected rather than Republicans) Back to the subject at hand, years past have seen Liz Carpenter, Bob Hardesty, Jake Pickle and other contemporaries of LBJ tell the really good stuff about one of the greatest Americans to ever live. Plan on joining us next year in what will be the final stretch in the 2006 races. Thanks, Charles

Hi Damon, Thanks for attending the Hays County Democratic Party Annual Birthday Party and fun-raiser. I enjoyed meeting you and was sorry we could not spend more time personally discussing the growth in Hays County and how energized and hardworking our activists are in this part of the state. We are almost there. We can take the R's in 2006 and will work overtime to do it. I'm most proud of the community clubs that have sprouted up all over our county. We have the Kyle/Buda Democrats, the Buda/Kyle Women Democrats, the San Marcos Area Democrats, the Democrat Veterans club, the Dripping Springs, DSDEMS, The WimDems, Wimberley Democrats, and the Tejano Dems. We also have Dem Dinner Clubs, a " Think Tank", numerous Dem Book Clubs. Don't be fooled. These are not social clubs. These are fully trained activists who come together with the HCDP and work as a volunteer force along with the Party in a Co-ordinated Campaign for our Dem Ticket. We are loaded for Bear!!!!
