Duffy Crane's Hat Not in the Ring

By Karl-Thomas Musselman

The following is an e-mail forwarded to me by two sources within minutes of each other. Major hat tip to both of you guys.

Subject: District 48

As you know, I have been seriously considering running for State Representative in District 48. After careful and deliberate evaluation, I have come to the conclusion that now is not the right time for me to run. This has been a difficult decision for me, but I am confident that this is the right choice at this time. I have the luxury of knowing there are other qualified candidates in this race who have the ability to challenge and beat the incumbent.

I cannot tell you how important your support and encouragement have been to me during this process. Having a community that is willing to recruit and support good candidates is an essential element of our representative democracy. I am very proud that each of you believed that I should serve as your State Representative. I am honored by your faith in me and your commitment to expend time, energy and money to elect me as a representative for District 48 who would reflect your values.

Despite that I will not be a candidate, I intend to continue my work in the community and remain committed to empowering people to effect positive social change. This election cycle is extraordinarily important for Texas and I hope that each of you will be actively involved in it. There are several House races that provide a unique opportunity to elect a new slate of representatives who will address issues like education and health care on the merits, rather than playing politics with them.

One of reasons I considered running for this office is my increasing concern that some of our elected officials are willing to sacrifice the basic institutions of our democracy for short-term political gain. I saw this in the redistricting that took place here in Texas and see it on the national level with the intervention by Congress in the Terry Schiavo matter and the threat of the nuclear option. At this time, I believe I can have the greatest impact by dedicating my energies to recruiting and supporting candidates who will respect the institutions and processes that make our democracy work for all of us.

Thank you again for your support and encouragement.

Duffy has done some outstanding work raising money for Democrats, she should be commended for considering the race.

And oh yeah, I hope I'm not the only one to notice what this message is NOT: an endorsement of Andy Brown.

Hopefully Andy will come to realize that when it comes to primary nods, you don't get to just "call it first." He's got to earn the right to take on Baxter; and I for one don't think he can/will.

Poor Andy, but there are lots of people in politics who think just because they call "shotgun" first means it's acceptable to assume they're important enough to take the front seat in the race.

Posted by: julia Ward Howe at August 17, 2005 10:11 AM

I hear that not only is Donna Howard considering the race, Kathy Rider, the AISD Board of Trustees President is also making feelers about District 48.

Posted by: Jobu at August 17, 2005 10:23 AM

I find it really interesting that people are accusing Andy Brown of "calling the nomination first."

He has been working hard, pounding the pavement every weekend in the last few months.

Have the other candidates done that? Will they do that once they start? To be working this hard, this far out is unprecedented.

Andy Brown is the only candidate -- or potential candidate -- who can beat Todd Baxter.

Posted by: David at August 17, 2005 08:47 PM

Brown has gone a lot farther than just calling "shotgun." He's actually running, which is more than I can say for anyone else. Thus, I'd say he is currently in the process of "earning" the primary nod. When I see these other people who are "considering" entering the race actually take action and began to campaign, then I will "consider" taking them seriously. What's with the animus toward Brown, anyway? Why are people so eager to put down the only fully functional candidate while simultaneously supporting potential candidates who are being listless and non-committal? If you don't like Brown, either run against him or encourage these so-called potential candidates to get moving. Otherwise, accept the fact that Brown has the wherewithal to run while the people you support are stuck in deliberation.

David, nice to see a voice of reason in here. Yes, a reasonable person would see the act of blockwalking every Sat/Sun in the Texas summer as a sign that Brown is a very diligent and dedicated worker who is determined to win this election. I have trouble fathoming how that is "calling" a spot in the race.

Jobu:

If interested, please contact me by e-mail. You'll find my address by clicking the URL below. This is not related to district 48.

Everyone:

Donna Howard and Andy Brown are both great people and outstanding Democrats. Whomever anyone thinks is better to take on Todd Baxter, no need to put down the other, even if you did write the Battle Hymn of the Republic, Julia...

Keep the orange burnt but not scorched!
