February 15, 2005Frost an FNC contributorBy Nathan NanceAccording to TVNewser, former Dallas congressman Martin Frost has been hired as a contributor for Fox News Channel, much like former Democratic senator Zell Miller. I don't want to get into an argument on whether or not Frost is a "conservative Democrat" and a DINO. We can save that vitriol for other places. Frost's record speaks for itself and he's no DINO. In fact, he came very close to being the chairman of the DNC. I really want to know what people think of the fact that both Miller and Frost were branded as it were (Miller for a very good reason) as "GOP-lite" and now both are contributing to FNC. I'm sure some might think that maybe we should be more lenient on some withing our party who reach across the aisle to get things done. I'm sure others will think that Martin Frost was too close to the Republicans and its good that he's not the chairman and that he's relegated to appearing on a conservative network. I'm looking for a debate here on what, exactly, you think about this. I'm also interested in hearing what you think the chances are that Frost can influence coverage that is more favorable to the Democrats on FNC. If you must have vitriol, here's more at dKos. Good to hear... a real Democrat will be a contributor on FOX News... YAY! Posted by: Byron L at February 15, 2005 09:14 PMWhat's DINO? Man, the insular blog culture of acronyms is sooo irritating. Posted by: Flash at February 15, 2005 09:17 PMand as for... "I don't want to get into an argument argument on whether Frost is a "conservative Democrat" or a DINO" - well... the answer is neither. Frost is a moderate. At least he is if you look at his voting record over his career instead of taking the anti-Frost for DNC talking points as fact... Posted by: Byron L at February 15, 2005 09:23 PMDINO = "Democrat in Name Only" - it's not really exclusively a "blog" thing... it's pretty well known I think. Posted by: Byron L at February 15, 2005 09:24 PMFrost in no way is a DINO, yeah he ran away from his party identification during the election, but can ya really blame him. Posted by: Tek_XX at February 15, 2005 11:28 PMwhat was he gonna do, sign on at a place with no ratings like CNN or MSNBC. Martin was a free agent and he isn't stupid. Fox is destroying the other cable news outlets in the ratings. He went where he knew he could paid and I would have done the same thing if I were his position. He will bring a welcome perspective to Fox. Posted by: Allan Bartlett at February 16, 2005 12:12 AMAllan - I actually agree with you on this. Money talks, and FOX probably offered Frost the best deal. He WILL bring a welcome perspective to FOX since their typical idea of a Democrat is silent Alan Colbes or DINO Zell Miller. Frost isn't the most eloquent of speakers, but he is great at sticking to his talking points, and quickly picking up on his opponent's weekness and go for a knockout punch (if you watched any of his debates against Pete Sessions, you'll know what I mean). Those talents are great for any talk show format, especially FOX News where the Democratic speakers are usually in a hostile environment. Posted by: Byron L at February 16, 2005 01:06 AMI'm glad there is so much discussion about this. I'm sure he's going to do great. I meant to say "and a DINO" in stead of "or". That's what I get for not really proofing my posts. I'll amend it to reflect that. I meant his record speaks for itself in that he is a moderate Democrat in a conservatve state, which is not bad. Posted by: Nate at February 16, 2005 01:14 AMNo matter how much Frost wants to stand up for Democrats on Fox, he won't be able to do it for very long. The purpose of creating Fox News was to give the GOP a bullhorn to shout down any inconvenient truths that popped up on CBS or CNN. The game is rigged on Fox. The fix is in. If Frost thinks he'll do any good for very long, he's fooling himself. Of course, fooling yourself isn't so hard on the conscience when you get six figures just for talking on TV. I want to go on the record as saying I would gladly talk on TV for a six-figure salary. I say that with all humor because I know it's not going to happen, but the point is I don't think any of us would turn down the offer to be a paid pundit. I think it's kind of disingenuous to call others on what we might also do if given the chance. I also want to go on the record as saying FNC is fixed and Frost will probably not be called on very much. I can't stand to watch that channel, which is why I normally don't know when the say totally bogus things until I read about it at Media Matters. Posted by: Nate at February 16, 2005 06:19 AMMaybe it's a ratings thing. I wish him the best Posted by: Daniel at February 16, 2005 07:19 AMI think Frost will offer a true Democratic perspective on Fox news. I am however sad to see such an adept legislator working as a commentator. I know I'm pushy where Martin Frost is concerned, but I'd love to see him run for senate if KBH doesn't run next cycle. I don't think he is likely to do this considering the past few months, but strong Democratic candidates are hard to find in this state, it's a shame during a time when I think Democrats may have a chance to make real in-roads that one of our strongest campaigners and legislators won't be in the game. Posted by: comeon at February 16, 2005 09:07 AMThat's a good point, comeon. Seeing Frost be a commentator now would be like Tom Brady becoming a commentator: still too many good years of fighting left in him. Don't let them sit him on the sidelines as a bobblehead. If he takes the Fox job for a few months and then jumps into the Senate race, then I say "Yeehaw! Pass the Shiner!" If he moves on to better things, then he'll be the first Democrat to leave that network untainted. Still, on balance, I believe the past is a good guide to what will happen in the future... so I'm pessimistic. Frost on FOX is good for Dems. Posted by: Count Blah at February 16, 2005 12:11 PMi'd have to say i think the FAUX game is rigged. i don't think any dem can go on that channel and get a fair shake. i mean, good luck and all that, but i'm not hopeful of anybody changing the propoganda machine into something worth watching. Posted by: anna at February 16, 2005 12:18 PMFrost is putting his credibility on the line by signing on with Fox. He will be judged by whether he sticks to his core beliefs on the air. Fox will be judged by whether they let him remain on the air if he DOES stick to those beliefs. Get back to me in six months. Posted by: Demo Memo at February 16, 2005 03:09 PMDemo is right. Frost is going to have to watch himself. Fox is notorious for setting up its Dem commentators for failure. They'll try to rattle him into embarassing himself and the Dem party on national tv. I think if he can maintain his composure, and his middle-of-the-road politics, he'll represent well. Posted by: Kevin at February 16, 2005 06:43 PM
