January 01, 2005Cotton Bowl Round-UpBy Jim DallasI had a wonderful opportunity to go to the Cotton Bowl in Dallas this morning, between the Aggies and the Tennesee Volunteers. First time (and probably last) I'll get stuck in the Aggie cheering section and accidentally get caught up in the Aggie War Hymn. Oh, to think of what would have been had I gone to Aggieland instead of Texas (and, for "mild loud," which is how the crowd was described by my Aggie relatives, the Aggie fans are LOUD.) Anyway, the old man is a Tennessee alumni and Vol fanatic, so that quickly put the maroon visions to rest. From Tennessee's second possession onwards, it was pretty much a smack-down, with five Aggie turn-overs (compare that to 8 in the entire regular season) and a lot of missed opportunities. Tennessee (particularly Rick Clausen) played a better-than-average game, and A&M's mistakes coupled with Vol momentum combined to seal the Aggies' fate. By the early fourth quarter Big Orange was up 38 - 0, with the only real question whether the game would end as a shutout (it didn't; the Aggies finally scored a touchdown with about 5 and a half minutes left in the fourth quarter). Nevertheless, there were a few moments where Reggie McNeal looked pretty formidable, and I wouldn't be surprised if the Ags learned the lessons from this season and shock us all when the fall rolls around. There is a lot of talent on that team, as a whole. Also, Oklahoma State's coach, Les Miles, is departing for LSU. I'll let Byron do the wrap on the Rose Bowl, since he's there. But here's the cliff-note version: Texas won on a last-second field goal, 38-37, in a very competitive game. Vince Young rocks. Michigan's freshman QB, Henne, rocks. As I was scrolling down the list of potential blogs from yahoo I could visit tonight and as soon as I saw this one, I said to myself, I will bet anything they have a college football and/or Rose Bowl Post. Thus, I have arrived and thankfully, the well rounded person that you are, you did not dissapoint me. The Texas-Michigan Rose Bowl game was incredible. After previous Big 12 blowouts when Nebraska and Oklahoma visited, the ROse Bowl people had to be nervous/furious about another non traditional match up. I had heard there was even talk about sucession from the BCS. Thankfully, the Horns and Wolverines was one for the ages. And passing purists can say whatever they wish about Vince Young, he is one preson I would not want on the opposing side if I am a head coach. Before I slice and dice the Les Miles hiring (yes, I am an LSU fan), I have to say something about the heartbreaking Saban farewell in the Cap One Bowl. Down 24-12, I was pacing around my residence, where there were four tv's on. Down 24-19, I was pacing and yelling. Up 25-24, I was praying that we would hang on. Alas, we did not and Saban goes out a loser... It was one of the greatest and yet saddest moments I have ever seen on a football field. (They say I stood there for five minutes afterward with my mouth hanging open... I can only take their word for it as I dont remember from the end of the LSU game until Texas and Michigan kicked off) On the subject of the Les Miles hiring... What the heck are we thinking? I dont understand why for the name of everything holy we arent promoting from within with Will Muschamp or Jimbo Fisher. Instead we have to look at Houston Nutt, who runs the worlds worst offense. We have to look at Bobby Petrino... please... And we have to hire Les Miles? I dont want to hear about his success, it has been marginal if anything. I dont want to hear about he will recruit better at LSU, he hasnt recruited a Oklahoma State. And I dont want to hear about his coaching ability. I have an example of that on tape... its named Wednesday night's Alamo Bowl. I dont understand why we think we need a guy to build our program? Our programs built. We need someone to maintain our program and these jokers were looking at or hiring are not it. Skip Bertman, I say this with all due respect... you arent coaching baseball anymore. We dont need you trying to make a utility player into a star. Hire Fisher, please. Congrats Texas!
