New poll: Americans don't know what the hell they want

By Nathan Nance

Guest post by Nate Nance

According to ABC News, a majority of Americans, 56%, believe that the cost of the war in Iraq doesn't equal the benefits and that both Bush and Rumsfeld aren't handling the war all that well either. Welcome to the party Capt. Obvious.

A majority, 60%, also think that the elections should go on Jan. 30 whatever the security situation is and 58% say that troops should remain until order is restored. Both of those are positions held by the administration, which is why 52% think Rumsfeld should be replaced.

All of this proves once again people don't really know what they want or why. That explains that other poll taken just last month where most people disagreed with the direction of the country, yet somehow Bush won re-election with a majority of the vote.

Typical... instead of celebrating the fact that people are turning against Bush's policies and that events in Iraq are sapping away his political capital, BOR would-be wonks take the occasion to once again bemoan the stupidity of the average American.

It's not that people don't know what they want - people are rightly concerned about what's happening in Iraq. The problem is that no one offered or is offering anything substantially different from Bush's plan in Iraq.

Who in Washington is calling for a withdrawl from Iraq? No wonder it's conventional wisdom that troops should stay until order is restored (of course, that will never happen while we're there).

Who in the Democratic establishment is giving voice to people's concerns? How do you suppose Rummy keeps weathering these scandals? How about that Biden yesterday? "I don't care" if Rummy stays or goes... way to take a stand, buddy.

Yes, Nate, people disagreed with the direction of the country, yet re-elected Bush: proof-positive that Kerry offered nothing substantially different for people to vote for - especially about Iraq. If you want to know what's wrong with politics in this country, Democratic party hacks like yourselves should stop blaming the "stupid" Americans and take a look in the mirror.

interesting indeed

Although there is an obvious bitter tone to Nate's post, I must disagree with the first commentor's opinion that BOR is calling the average American "stupid" (even though international standardized testing would provide ample evidence to back such a statement).

Obviously we can not simply pull up stakes in Iraq and leave...most people understand that no matter what their political leanings might be. John Kerry offered the possibility of rebuilding the relationships with allies that President Bush has all but destroyed. To me, that is something substantially different. I do not think that Bush can rebuild those relationships without apologizing, which is something he has no history of doing.

The disillusionment people are feeling should be remembered for its historical lesson. Moments of strong nationalistic feelings are poor states in which to make rational decisions, especially decisions of whether or not to enter war.

Thanks for the rather mature ad hominem attack in your name "dobbs is a right wing nut, btw". Thanks also for using my old email as your email link. Why not show your face? Too scared? Just like a Leftist- coward.
