June 20, 2004Mitt Romney can bite meBy Jim DallasMassachusetts governor Mitt Romney, a Republican and known Bush-toadie, is complaining about how Kerry's presidential aspirations are hurting Massachusetts. I'd remind Romney that Massachusetts, like all states, has two United States senators, including the very able Edward Kennedy. Texas, on the other hand, has only one governor, but that didn't keep a certain former Texas governor from harboring presidential ambitions throughout 2000 (and, actually, most of 1998 and 1999 as well). Indeed, a compelling case could be made that many, if not most, of the budgetary problems Texas has faced over the last five years stem from George W. Bush's 2000 presidential race. Bush, as governor, was not averse to pragmatism - until he decided to run for president, and put sucking up to right-wing ideologues ahead of the best interests of the Lone Star State. Would Texas have a working school finance system today if Bush hadn't run in 2000? I don't know, but the chances would have been a lot higher. If Kerry resigned now, of course, Mitt Romney would get to tap a replacement. But he'd better hurry, because the Mass assembly is gearing up to insure that Kerry's successor will be a Democrat. Every time a senator or governor (or house minority leader -- I'm looking at you, Dick "Let's Invade Iraq Now!" Gephardt") gears up for a presidential run, the long-term interests of their constituents often get set aside in favor of short-term political benefit. Crocodile tears should not impress anyone. Aren't you happy that Romney's Old Man never got anywhere as a Presidential candidate? I worked to defeat him as an Alf Landon supporter. Posted by: Brenda Helverson at June 20, 2004 06:26 PMDoes Mitt think that he's governor of Utah? A Republican who wants to have a successful tenure as governor of a progressive and populous Northern state, needs to act more like George Ryan and George Pataki and less like Rick "Goodhair" Perry or Jeb Bush. Posted by: Tim Z at June 20, 2004 08:17 PMExactly Tim Z, hopefully when John Kerry is elected Prez he'll pay a couple of visits to Mass to do a little campaigning, lets see what tone Romney has then. Posted by: Tek_XX at June 21, 2004 02:11 AMThis article is unfair to Shrub for 2 reasons: * A senator anywhere is more significant than the governor of Texas, who is a distant 3rd in power in the state. * The idea that Shrub could improve any political discourse by his presence is laughable. Posted by: Matthew Saroff at June 21, 2004 10:54 AMYou guys forget about Senator Paul Coverdale in Georgia? How do you think Zell Miller became a senator anyway? Republican Coverdale died in office and Democratic governor selected a Democrat to succeed him. Nothing new. By the way aren't you guys soooo glad that Zell Miller is up there? Hey lets talk about carring the Presidents water. I noticed what State Rep. Garnet Coleman said about Rep. Sylvester Turner. So I guess that Senator's Kerry, Clinton, Johnson, Nelson, Edwards, and many others all carried the Presidents water for approval to go to war in Iraq. Sen. Kennedy carried the Pres. water for the education and prescription drug bills. Or to quote Coleman "...during our worst time for the Democratic Party". These must not be strong Democrats because they worked closely with the Republican leadership. You guys don't have that big tent going for you anymore. Well maybe an overnight camping tent. Hey how about ex Senator Sam Nunn for Veep?? Or maybe the OU ex Senator David Boren, he'd be a good choice. Posted by: peter at June 21, 2004 01:28 PM
