Buy more Girl Scout cookies

By Jim Dallas

Because Atrios said so.

Because my young(er) sister, who is a Brownie Scout, said so.

And because the nutters in Waco said not to do so:

This year's annual Girl Scout cookie sale is going well, despite, or perhaps because of calls for a boycott over the local council's sponsorship of Planned Parenthood's "Nobody's Fool Conference" and the groups’ decision to honor Planned Parenthood's executive director.

"We're pleased to report that the cookie sales have been going very well. All the media attention has definitely put us in the spotlight and those that are very much in support of girl scouts and want to show their support of girl scouts, have been going out of their way to find out where they can purchase cookies, " says local Girl Scouts Executive Director Beth Vivio.

Vivio says some residents are dropping by the scout office to place orders-- something that's never happened before.

And some regular cookie buyers are doubling their orders.

But there have been a few negative incidents...

Vivio says some young cookie sellers in Temple were the target of what she calls inappropriate comments as a result of the controversy.

Pro Life Waco's John Piscotta is the voice on the radio spots calling for the boycott, including a new one that went on the air this week.

He says his group is not going after the girl scouts and that the ads-- target adults.

Pisciotta say he was asked by the station manager of KBDE, a Waco Christian radio station, to make the public aware of the affiliation between the Girl Scouts and Planned Parenthood.

"I regret if the nice relationships that some people have with their scout organizations of troops have been disrupted, but there are also many moms and dads that are shocked by this information," says Pisciotta.

In response to the ads, Vivio says, "We feel like we are being used by this individual and his attempt to further his cause. Certainly, he's entitled to his beliefs and has a lot of people who support what he's doing, but it's very unfortunate that the Girl Scouts and particularly the young girls we serve are being used in this way."

Some parents have pulled their daughters out of the Girl Scouts because of the affiliation with Planned Parenthood, but others remain supportive.

Whether the council continues to co-sponsor the annual Nobody's Fool Conference is a question that will be addressed at a board meeting next month.

Vivio says it's now become an internal issue that has strong support on both sides.

Like Atrios, I'm waiting for the Boy Scouts to stop caving into the nutters.

I myself am an Eagle Scout. But I'll tell you something, I'll take Girl Scout Cookies over our Boy Scout Popcorn any day of the week. Whomever decided we should get the popcorn should be arrested and locked away. Popcorn!?!? Over cookies!?!? Oh please.

Planned Parenthood? If you want to save the world, you have to reduce the population from 6 billion to 2 billion using the Chinese 1 child policy. The only organisation that's up front willing to support this is the Church of Fandel.

Boy Scout Popcorn???

Must have dropped out before i got to the popcorn

But yeah Girl Scott organization is definitly more progressive than boy scouts

Posted by: Tek_XX at February 22, 2004 08:01 PM

We need to hammer the Right on this. When the Boy Scouts openly embraced discrimination against gays, the Right tried to tar and feather us as "unpatriotic" for challenging the Scouts's policy.

We owe a duty to expose the hypocrisy and remind everyone how "unAmerican" these people are for attacking the Girl Scouts.

Isn't it fitting, considering the whole gender inequity issue too?

Buy Thin Mints for Planned Parenthood? I think I can handle that!

Full disclosure, or perhaps bragging... my very first contract programming job was writing the political mailing list app for the local Planned Parenthood in 1988. No job since then has given me anywhere nearly as much satisfaction that one did.

And now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to buy some Thin Mints...

50% of the price of Girl Scout Cookies counts as a charitable deduction on your Federal income taxes.

If you itemize -- file a Schedule A, that is -- buy twice as many cookies this year!

[Just get a receipt from the GSA for your records, OK?]

BTW, Boy Scout Popcorn is 70 - 80% deductible.

Where can I buy Girl Scout cookies in College Station?

Posted by: Azzurra at March 3, 2004 05:30 PM

hi i'm in chicago and did a google search on "crawford texas girl scouts" after the specific troop number came up empty [just the news report]. do you by chance have an address for the troop? i plan on ordering a box or two of thin mints, they could use it.

If we get Bush and his crazed, right-wing, religious zealots out of the White House in November, hopefully some will return to their senses. I am stocking up on Thin Mints as we speak. These "parents" need help.

I am a brownie troop mom and I think this whole uproar is totally ridiculous!!! Puhleeze, do these moms honestly think kids either don't know or don't care about sex ed? As the mother of a young girl, I would rather have my daughter be armed to the hilt with information rather than "feeling her way" and end up in trouble. Support your local Brownie/Girl Scout Troop!!!

Seems the religious right (make that the religious WRONG) wants to keep them as ignorant as THEY are, a "better barefoot and pregnant than informed" approach. GIMME THE COOKIES!!
