November 13, 2003About the Burnt Orange ReportBy Byron LaMastersWelcome to the Burnt Orange Report. We're called the Burnt Orange Report because UT's colors are Burnt Orange and White, and we didn't really like the sound of the White Report. We'll save that one for the Council of Conservative Citizens and their good friends Haley Barbour and Trent Lott. The Burnt Orange Report was founded at Live Journal in April 2003 by Byron LaMasters and Jim Dallas. In June 2003, Andrew Dobbs joined the Burnt Orange Report as a contributor. Later that month we decided to upgrade to our own domain name: BurntOrangeReport.com, which is owned by Byron. Our current site is hosted by Dreamhost (which we highly recommend), and we use the Moveable Type software (also highly recommended for any aspiring bloggers out there). Karl-Thomas joined our team of contributers in October 2003. We are all students at the University of Texas at Austin (ok, well Jim has graduated now). We blog about National politics, Texas politics, Austin politics, UT and other college issues, and anything else that interests us. We're all Democrats and have been all involved in the University Democrats. We'd all probably consider ourselves progressives, but we don't agree on everything. We're no dittoheads, and we all have different writting styles and we even have our disagreements, since we all think for ourselves and all that, but we believe in most of the same general Democratic principals. Thanks for stopping by, and we always appreciate respectful comments and debate. Posted by Byron LaMasters at November 13, 2003 08:13 PM | TrackBack

Hello Texans Even though I am a Texas Aggie and no longer live in Texas, I can forgive you for the title of your blog. From what I can read here in "Burnt Orange" country, there are at least 5 sane Texans. The 5th one is my son--living with his family just north of Austin. http://bobwhitson.typepad.com/howlings/ Posted by: Bob Whitson at February 16, 2004 09:23 PMA&M, Class of '60. Y'all the best thing to come outta Austin since da Kinkster. Keep up the good works. I just found this (thanks to the Perry rumors) and I'm glad I did. I've been waiting years for this...a place to talk politics with a Texas focus. Great job guys! Posted by: Cesar at February 18, 2004 06:12 PMLikewise to the last post, I found you guys checking out the Perry rumor, and appreciate your broad focus on politics from a UT, Democratic perspective. By the way, now that Dean's out, how do you -- Andrew, Byron, Jim, Karl -- feel about Kerry, Edwards, etal.? Stephen I'm currently undecided. Kerry makes me squirm a bit, but Edwards will have a more difficult time going toe to toe with Bush on national security. I'd love to see Edwards charm, looks, personality, youthfulness, vigor, marketability and ability to sell his arguement morphed with Kerry's national security / war creditability, veteran support and experience, but alas we must choose one or the other. They're perfect compliments to each other on a ticket, and I'd love to see that as our ticket but I'm honestly not sure who best leads it. Posted by: ByronUT at February 19, 2004 04:45 PMSo Byron, what about Kerry makes you squeamish? I personally favor him over Edwards because all Edwards talks about are his humble past and the evils of free trade. Kerry has enough national security credibility to take Bush, so I'm in favor of a Kerry/Edwards ticket. Maybe with Edwards on it they have a chance to take a southern state. Posted by: Ryan Tacher at February 23, 2004 03:43 PMYou guys are great. My linking to you may be a dubious honor, but I'm proud to have any association with you whatsoever. Cheers. Posted by: r. Houston Bridges at February 24, 2004 01:31 PMRe Perry flap: There are no HARD facts yet. FYI picture of the Gov and spouse at the Arena football game in Monday's Statesman. Posted by: Jim at February 24, 2004 10:39 PMI'm not a UT student,But my son is. Dean may be down but he is not out. He is still on the ballot and he gets my vote. He put the democratic party on the right track. They sure didn't seem to be able to locate the tracks until they led him to them. We need truly progressive delegates at the National convention to help keep this party headed down the tracks. I'm a TexasEx and now I live in Cincinnnati. It's so good to have a connection with my former Texas Dems. What a great site, THANKS! Posted by: Lisa C from Texas 2 Cincy at March 5, 2004 10:01 AM"If you're not a liberal at 20, you have no heart, and if you're not a conservative at 40, you have no head." Someday when all the writers of the Burnt Orange Report have real jobs, maybe even own a business, you'll get this. Posted by: Max Eddings at March 10, 2004 11:13 AMOk Max... I'm a capitolist silly... why do you think I've joined BlogAds? I love capitolism and I love liberalism. They're compatable for some of us.... Posted by: ByronUT at March 12, 2004 12:45 AMHey guys, great website. Although I am probably on the other side of the aisle of you, it's not by far. I worked for Gov. Bullock in the 97th Leg - he called me his little Republican. Truth be told, my politics tend to make my conservative friends think I've crossed the aisle! Will enjoy the exchange of ideas. Hook 'Em!! Forget about red states vs. blue states. Let's think orange. Let orange bleed into the country but let's keep Austin weird. You go Ricky!! Boris UT 2000 Thank you for demonstrating to this jaded Aussie that at least some Americans are thoughtful, respectful and decent. A lot of us had begun to think you were all like your President - dangerously stupid. I look forward to reading more articles about the things that should matter to us all - respect for freedom, obligation to our community, and a general desire to behave well. Posted by: Lyn at September 2, 2004 06:12 PMHave you considered adding an Atom feed to your current RDF syndication? Posted by: Melissa Della at November 8, 2004 08:03 PMThanks for assuring me that there is some semblance of intelligence in my soon to be adopted favorite state Sorry TX got the short end at the DNC, ( the nosebleed section at the fleet center) you can host the next one !!! Cheers Wow. You liberals remind me of why I'm attending A&M. I don't think I could cope with that much nonsense. I'm socially conservative, and everytime I think of a great national party advocating killing babies and allowing those of the same sex to 'have relations' with one another, and the fact that people vote for such heartless and soulless monsters, I lose a little bit of faith in my fellow human beings. I'm all for helping the poor and unemployed, and providing health coverage to American citizens, because those are decent, godly things one can do to help one's fellow man. But redefining marriage, and especially allowing and even promoting infanticide is an abhorrent trait marking only the blackest of souls. May God have mercy on you all, and thank God I live in Aggieland. Posted by: JP at December 10, 2004 04:26 AMI'm an Aggie (Class of '87) - not all of us are mouth-breathing members of the flat-earth society - and enjoy the site very much. Keep up the good work!
