October 18, 2003Campaign Cash (or lack of it)By Karl-Thomas MusselmanIn the money race for the Democratic Nomination, Carol Moseley Braun seems to be having trouble even leaving the gate, raising ~$125,000 this last quarter, beating only Rev. Sharpton who came in at about $121,000.
No kidding. When compared to Howard Dean's $14.83 Million, her campaign looks like it is lacking some serious "Magic". Even the endorsement of NOW isn't having any effect. As sad as it is, I really like Carol and even Al Sharpton who are both lacking in financial Magic but not charisma. In every debate so far, I have looked forward to their comments. Braun always makes me smile; she is such a happy person who knows she can't win but is in the race because she really believes in Hope. Sharpton has the best zingers by far, and is like a Democratic Peacemaker and Cheerleader. They should seriously consider exiting the race (as should others- a different discussion) but I would be sad to see them go when they do because of the above. Yeah, even though Braun, Sharpton and Kucinich are in my opinion "vanity candidates" with no shot at the nomination, I think that all three add to the debate in the primary. So, I really don't feel like they ought to drop out, however pathetic their candidacies may be. Kucinich, for example, I'm glad he's running.... he makes Dean and everyone else look more moderate. As for Sharpton, for all the fear of divisiveness, he's probably been the most unifying candidate in the field. I'm glad he's part of the debate. As for Braun... she's a well-qualified, articulate, Black woman, and she adds to the debate. Posted by: ByronUT at October 18, 2003 11:08 PMBraun's running because she was pretty much dared to by Donna Braile - and Mosley Braun most likely needs a job of some kind, since ethical violations have pretty much ended her publicly elected career. I'd say she's sticking in the race for attention, obviously. Sharpton, although I disagree about 95 percent with his message, from listening to him, actually sounds like he wants to stay in the race to keep his issues at the forefront during the debates. I think he'll pull an Alan Keyes of 2000, where, if possible, he'll stay in the race until the end, and at the convention threaten to leave unless his key issue is given the attention he thinks it is deserved. For Keyes, it was getting a staunch Pro-Life VP. For Sharpton who knows. Kucinich is just vein, and actually thinks he has a chance to win. But anyone who use's the "goddess of peace" in their introduction speech to running for President is obviously on another realm of reality than 90 percent of the populace. Posted by: Josh at October 19, 2003 05:49 AMBraun always makes me smile; she is such a happy person who knows she can't win but is in the race because she really believes in Hope. She is in the race at the behest of the Dem powers that be who hope to deflect black support (and white attention) away from Al Sharpton - not from Al to Braun, necessarily. Just whatever it takes to keep them away from Sharpton and thus on the plantation. Sharpton has the best zingers by far, and is like a Democratic Peacemaker and Cheerleader. Ouch...I can only assume this analysis is based completely on political considerations, and ignores the racial demogoguery and malice spewed by the morally debased Al Sharpton his entire "career". Tawana Brawley ring a bell? Light a candle for the Korean grocers who were killed by a mob incited by Al Sharpton, too. Posted by: Mark Harden at October 19, 2003 11:48 AMAs Josh mentioned above, I'd seriously look into Braun's awful ethical record as a US Senator before saying kind things about her.
