August 29, 2003Wagons South!By Jim DallasTwo entries from The Nation and The American Prospect make the case that Democrats can win in the South (and among Christian conservatives) by talking about social justice and jobs: The bottom line for Democrats should be clear: Fighting the next election on behalf of jobs, family farms, healthcare and education for all, a populist Democratic nominee could give George Herbert Hoover Bush a real race in a region that the GOP--and its media boosters--now take for granted. The question of the day is, "how does the Democratic nominee campaign as a socially conservative bleeding-heart in the South, but as a socially liberal tightwad in the North?" More on this later... If a candidate doesn't have to run solely "on the issues", then he doesn'thave to be a "socially liberal tightwad" to win in the north. Clinton wasn't but got by on charisma. Clark wouldn't have to either. Posted by: phil at August 29, 2003 03:08 PMYou are, of course, correct. Of course, the argument I am positing does not rely on candidate attributes, and as generic strategy is... generic. Posted by: Jim D at August 29, 2003 03:37 PMI wrote the book, WAGONS SOUTH! It's an historical novel about three families on their way to Florida, 1859, 1887 and 1918. I was browsing and found this website. Smaller and smaller world. Adora I wrote WAGONS SOUTH! Watch the web for my new book, GOLDEN SIBLINGS another historical novel. Dianna McCallum is the strong-willed, self-directed daughter of a southern plantation owner whose quest for relatives of color takes her across the continent in 1849. I wrote WAGONS SOUTH!
