December 01, 2004Vo Wins Recount- Picks Up a VoteBy Andrew DobbsI just got a call from our top political consultant, Kelly Fero, who informed me that the recount of the Heflin/Vo race has been completed and not only did Vo win AGAIN, but an undervote that had not been counted previously was agreed by both sides to have cast their vote for Vo- increasing his margin of victory from 32 votes to 33. All this does is make it seem more and more like Heflin is a sore loser and that Craddick can't take Vo for an answer. /pun Donate to the Party today so we can keep the GOP from stealing these elections! Good news. It certainly undermines Heflin's contest. Posted by: Byron L at December 1, 2004 03:10 PMGreat news. Since the legislature cannot change the result but only order a new election it would seem that Heflin is toast. I can't imagine that he could win a special election without Bush on the ticket. I gotta think that Vo has more potential voters in that district than Heflin. Posted by: Kent at December 1, 2004 04:36 PMSo would you consider the endless recounting in Washington State to constitute a Party "stealing an election"?!? Posted by: BoiFromTroy at December 1, 2004 06:27 PMNo, the case in Washington is not stealing an election. Personally, I don't think this is "stealing" an election either. Both are going through the prescribed process. I would say that Gregoire has a stronger case considering it is a difference of 42 votes out of like 2 million cast. But I will concede that 32 (now 33) votes is a razor thin margin. I don't think the GOP should be quite as concerned about losing this particular seat but should be concerned about winning this seat in this manner. The damage wrought by this election contest could harm the inroads the GOP has made into Harris County's Asian community. As a Democrat, I have to say I would like nothing more then for the Houston Asian community to become wonderfully active members of our coalition. Coupled with redistricting, the GOP is now trying to consolidate power in a pretty shameful way. The good people of our state are going to kick their ass at the ballot box sooner than they think.
