February 20, 2004Ok, I'm Going to let this restBy Byron LaMastersYeah, I think it's best I take the advice of a few people from the last thread and of some other people I've spoken to. I tired of posting on this, on all the rumors and hearsay, and while I think there is a story here, I know that there's multiple mainstream media sources searching the story, and if there's something there (barring a massive coverup), we'll hear about it. And I'll be sure to post about it when there is. For now, though, I'm just going to get back to blogging on other stuff. Update: Well, I'm really just torn on all of this. If anything substantial comes my way, I'll post it, but I'm getting a little tired of just reporting hearsay and rumors. As I've said, the mainstream media IS ON THIS. And they have many more resources and contacts than I do, and they're on the case. I'll continue to follow what happens, and I'll use my judgement in what I post. But it's hard to not mention this. If anything, it'll give you a good laugh (via the Agonist). -Byron Posted by Byron LaMasters at February 20, 2004 06:12 PM | TrackBack

You guys should keep reporting on this. If this story has any truth to it, Perry needs to exposed for the hypocrite that he is. Its too bad you UT Dems don't have the backbone to keep this story going. Let the GOP continue to steamroll over everyone in this state. Posted by: blah at February 20, 2004 06:52 PMA search on "Rick Perry Divorce" lead me to your site which I must say that as a ex-Austinite, gay, UT alum and Democrat, I have found very interesting as well as "juicy" and thought provoking. This current gossip, reminds me of a similar situation a few years back involving another well-known public servant based in Austin. While the gossip was known throughout the community (both gay and straight) and the national news was also aware of the story, nothing worth noting ever came of it. Then again this was before Miss Lewinski hit the scene. So, it will be very interesting to see how this latest "scandal-in- waiting" pans out. In the meantime, I enjoy and appreciate your comments and those of your audience. Posted by: NWLonghorn at February 20, 2004 08:29 PMPlease keep on this story. Rank hypocrisy is always relevant in a politician, especially one who has built his career catering to the ultra-sanctimonious religious right. It would be an irony for the ages if these rumors are true, and given the current tipping point with respect to acceptance of non-hetero relationships, could well drastically affect the course of social evolution. You could make history--don't shy away from this opportunity. Posted by: Bassfish at February 20, 2004 09:58 PMI hear you Byron, but a frenzy is building! Posted by: Ayellem at February 20, 2004 10:01 PMYou guys should keep reporting on this. If there's something new to report, yes. But repeating the same old stuff over and over again just gets stale. The TX GOP has more conventional problems to focus on at the moment. Isn't it better to let these Republican peccadillos "trickle down" through the media little by little? Ideally, let the Democrats get tons more free publicity with one or two more rounds of primaries. Then let attention shift to the self-proclaimed protectors of "family values". Posted by: Tim Z at February 20, 2004 10:51 PMThe Delay thing is much more important to people more interested in politics. Yet, this Perry story will definitely get much more publicity and do a lot more damage than the other story. Perhaps both hitting a peak in the airwaves would do optimal levels of damage, but you take what you can get when you get it. If you follow the news at all and observe how these stories evolve, you will recognize that posting anything about the story keeps it alive and in peoples' consciousness'. Keeping this story alive until its proven to be solidly false is a must because these pious right wingers need to be exposed for being the hypocrites that they are. I've heard enough gay bashing, diplomatic and much worse, to last the rest of my life. Let people be what they are. If story is exposed perhaps the GOP will back off. Posted by: blah at February 20, 2004 11:34 PMI heard the story will be in the Statesman on Saturday. But, alas it is 2:00 a.m. - you would expect the online version of the paper to have tommorrow's headlines, and nothing on it. Posted by: WhoMe? at February 21, 2004 02:07 AMYea Byron, I think it is a good idea to shut your mouth since you are putting "unproven rumors" on your front page about people you do not even know. My suggestion to you is maybe you should do a little more investigating before printing things. Some of the comments on here ARE totally untrue, and I know that first hand, you, Byron, have jumped to conclusions! Next time find out what to jump on and what to sit on! Posted by: noneya at February 21, 2004 08:56 AMnoneya sounds like a sissy. Posted by: hahaha at February 21, 2004 10:37 AMOh give me a break. Rick Perry defenders out there---you're going to be much, much better off in the long run not telling others to "jump to conclusions." I laughed out loud when I read this, "Some of the comments on here ARE totally untrue." Um, okay. So are you saying the readers here should believe that statement instead? LOL! Come on. You don't know any more than anyone else. Don't talk about facts when you're criticisizing someone else for not knowing facts. Heh. Hilarious. No matter what, someone is going to talk sooner or later. These kinds of things happen for a reason. Letting go of a story like this is surrender and giving this man, who will soon be exposed as a hypocrite, a pass. NO WAY. NO MERCY. Posted by: Susan at February 21, 2004 10:55 AMIt does a mother's heart good to see the kids so involved... This rumor is all over the NEVER-DEFUNCT Dean For America blog. You should know that. And America's Best Christian, Betty Bowers, has weighed in as well: http://www.bettybowers.com/austin.html So you KNOW there's fire behind the smoke. NEVER abandon a story when you KNOW there's substance lurking somewhere. Even Atrios mentions the Gov in a recent post on Eschaton. Don't let anybody scoop you! Posted by: Deanocrat at February 21, 2004 08:00 PMOk, so I am at a dinner part here in Austin with a bunch of politicos and EVERYONE has heard the rumors, including a couple from Laredo from their parents down in the Valley. Then the 16-year-old daughter of one of the people pipes up "Is this about Governor Perry being gay?" We say yes, and ask her where she heard. As God is my witness, this was her direct quote: "A homeless guy on the street told me." This thing is so widespread homeless people are telling high schoolers about it! Posted by: Blue at February 21, 2004 11:11 PMThe Chron knows: "Gov. Rick Perry – who, as of press time, appears to still be married and living in the Governor's Mansion" - From Naked City, Feb 6th! Posted by: austin - anon at February 22, 2004 02:34 AMThere are so many rumors out there, who knows what is true and what isn't?! I myself have heard several different versions, first had to do with Mrs. Perry and an affair, then Mr. P. Who knows?! I wish something would come out so we would know! I am in Texas and am really pissed that we might have elected a gay guy, all us rednecks got mis lead! LOL! Posted by: MR. T at February 22, 2004 11:25 AMhttp://news.google.com/news?scoring=d&q=perry Austin Wranglers debut at home with win over Tampa Bay, 56-48 06:12 PM CST on Sunday, February 22, 2004 Gov. Rick Perry and Texas First Lady Anita Perry flipped the coin and the game got underway. Wasn't Perry supposed to be at the Presidenial Governor's Association Meeting in DC? If I were Bush (the thought just repulses me) I would not to be seen anywhere near Perry either. Posted by: WhoMe? at February 22, 2004 11:23 PMWell now that Perry showed up to the Wranglers with wife in tow is the story dead? The Austin American Statesman printed a color photo of Rick and Anita clasping hands today. Posted by: Is This Story Dead? at February 23, 2004 12:09 PMConspiracy theory alert: of course Perry and wife will be seen in public together. Of course Anita won't file for divorce or hire Betty Beavers. The Republican political establishment will see to it that this rumor is quashed, and will no doubt do whatever it takes to get Anita to play along. The damage is done. The rumor and its variants are widespread, and come next election cycle, expect Perry to decline to run so he can "spend more time with his family". Or, as others suggest, get a cushy job in Washington. If it's all true, the weak link is Anita, and it's the amount of dignity and pride she's willing to sacrifice before she gets sick of the lies and deceit and exposes everything. I doubt Perry himself, or Connor himself, are going to out themselves. If it's all false, the blogging community has egg all over its face over this one, and the mainstream media will be a bit gunshy to believe rumors and inuendo the next time. It may be true, it may not be true, but the fact that most of us wish it were true may be the real story. Hey.....maybe the rumor got mixed up and it was a "K" instead of a "P" and Kerry is the queer! Lets start a rumor, surely it will be true if someone says it. I am embarresed that left wing liberals the likes of which are on here even claim to be Texans...why don't you all get nuetered and move to France. Posted by: Mike at March 13, 2004 12:53 PM
