I'm sorry, but maybe we're not looking looking at the same Official Maps of the Texas Legislature. The Staples map as amended was passed out of the Senate Jurisprudence Committee. The map is Plan C01327. Take a look at it. You know Mark, I even saved a copy of the UT area for your convenience. As you'll notice, the actual University of Texas would be placed in Lamar Smith's 21st district (San Antonio). However, the Baseball field over on the other side of I-35 would be in the new 25th District which, yes, would extend all the way down to the Valley. Finally, my apartment, which a mile north of UT on 38th Street would be in the 10th district dominated by suburban Houston. Who would represent UT on this map, Mark? No one. C01327 was adopted by the Senate on July 23. http://www.tlc.state.tx.us/research/redist/redist.htm Which is the "current" map, then? I do not pretend to know the intricacies of legislation, perhaps a former legislative aide or two can weigh in. My primary point regarding the abandonment of their constituents by the AWOL Dems stands in any case: the map being debated at the end of the regular session had no such stretch from Austin to McAllen. It was only the choice of the Dems to disengage from the process which allowed the map you despise to even be submitted for consideration. The house map during the session had the 25th going from East Austin to Laredo to the valley, Mark. I remember Rep. Dan Branch R-Park Cities calling it the NAFTA district on talk radio.
