BOR's Election Night Coverage

by: Phillip Martin on Mon Mar 06, 2006 at 16:20:05 PM CST

Tomorrow night Burnt Orange Report turns into Primary Election Central. We will man the computers all night long, bringing you updates on dozens of races across the state.

We plan on having 10 continuously updating posts that cover all the Democratic and Republican primary races in Texas. Each post will have no more than the candidates names and the latest numbers - allowing you to easily scroll through BOR's front page for a quick glance at all the updated numbers in each and every race. In each entry's extended entry, you will find more details about the race, and be able to comment specifically on whichever candidate/race you want to talk about.

We will put the categories up tomorrow, mid-afternoon, so you'll be familiar with the format. Here's the list of posts, in the order they'll appear:

1) Statewide Races (Bell v. Gammage, etc.)
2) Democratic Cong. + Senate Races (this will include Cuellar v. Rodriguez, Madla v. Uresti, CD 1, and CD 7)
3) Major Democratic House Races (this will include the Edwards/Miles/Bennett race in HD 146, Bolton v. Earle in HD 47, and Vaught v. Smith in HD 107)
4) Republican Cong. + Senate Races (this will include CD 22, SD 2, SD 3, SD 7, and SD 18)
5) Leininger 5 + Grusendorf/Patrick
6) Texas House Round Up (this will include all other Democratic and Republican House races)
7) Travis County Races
8) Harris County Races
9) DFW Races
10) Valley Races

KT, Vince, Matt, and I will be handling most of these posts. However, we are looking for a reader (or two) that can help us with the Travis County races, and the Valley races. You would only need to provide updates once ever 30 minutes or so for a few hours. If you are interested in helping us with updates, please e-mail KT or myself (or leave us a note in the comments section), and we'll get you set up for tomorrow night.

Be sure and spread the word - BOR is the place to get the most updated election night returns on each and every race in Texas!

To all (0.00 / 0)
I really want to encourage readers to step up to the plate and take races or areas listed that they can cover and have an interest in.  This will be the first real communal effort in reporting, enabled by our new system and we are going to test it to the max in preparation for this November.

I'll get you set up with front page powers and everything for this project. Your chance to shine and contribute!

Yes, but what would Treaty Oak have to say about it?

Another Thing
I think we should encourage Journals on specific races not covered by the threads if people would like to cover things that may not be on our general radar. I'd fully support that.

Reminds Me Of The Good Old Days... (0.00 / 0)
This reminds me of the good old days back when I was in the newspaper business. Our office was on the square and we had an office with a large window that opened up into a conference room. Not only did we write our stories and monitor the e-night results, we also posted local and other election results on the window for crowds outside to see. It was always quite a site. I have some pics from the good old days I was going to post on my blog today, but, alas, I look huge in them, given I've lost a lot of weight since then.

Texas House District 71 (3.00 / 1)
"Rob Beckham, Kevin Christian, Susan King and John Young are all hoping to snatch the Republican nomination Tuesday.

If one of them receives a majority of votes after polls close, the winner will challenge Democrat Mel Hailey and Libertarian Vanessa Harris in November for the seat Rep. Bob Hunter is vacating."

The above is from the Abilene Reporter News.  The race has been pretty nasty for this area, where the candidate annointed by the BBB generally is a shoe-in.

Rob Beckham is the political establishment candidate.

Christian has been under attack for capitalizing on his name in something of an unseemly manner ("Vote Christian" as opposed to "Vote for Christian" in mailers to local church congregations.  He seems to be the choice of the Abilene Christian University and hard social right crowd.

Susan King is something of a maverick--current school board member with a lot of bipartisan support--especially from educators and health care providers.  She's probably the best Republican of the bunch, and because of that she might just be the most beatable, although I doubt Mel Hailey really stand a chance against any of these three here deep in the darkest heart of Red Texas.

Young is the dark horse, and his support will come from the Merkel and Sweetwater parts of the district.  He's behind in fundraising, and I've seen nor heard any advertising in Abilene for him.  He still might draw in the high single to low double digits from the Nolan County area.

Beckham and King seem to be equal in the signage war, and I'd give King the edge in radio ads. Christian is a distant third in terms of signage, but is the clear winner in my opinion of both radio and TV ads.

If y'all want me to blog this race, I'll be glad to do it.  I might not be able to start until about 8 p.m., since I will be attending my precinct convention with the intention of supporting Maxey at the State Convention for Democratic State Chair.  Our local county chair won't even respond to my emails as to whether we have an active precint chair, or how many delegates have been allocated.

Email me a mikecable@gmail.com and let me know.  I'd love to post now and in the future.

House D-22 (0.00 / 0)
I'll be attending the Nick Lampson event in Sugar Land to kick off his campaign against DeLay or Campbell. It will be a wifi enviroment so I'll keep you informed of this event. How ironic it would be if Tom is defeated in a upset on a night he decides to leave his district to attend a fundraiser and rub shoulders with lobbyist.

We need the truth in Disctrict 22.

Great
We'll be covering the returns of CD 22 in the "Republican Cong. + Senate Races" thread (Vince will write it). We'd love to hear from you!

This may not fit in (0.00 / 0)
but here's the SUSA poll released on Monday

Favorable/Unfavorable/Neutral/Unfamilar aongst Democrats

Bell-
Favorable: 23%
Unfavorable: 8%
Neutral: 13%
Unfamiliar: 57%

Gammage-
Favorable: 15%
Unfavorable: 11%
Neutral: 21%
Unfamilar: 53%

I'd sorta prefer Gammage win, but either way, i'd prefer a scenario where Democrats kick a lot of Republican ass in November.

So yeah, best of luck with your election night fun.

Be sure to also take a look at HD-118 (0.00 / 0)
On both the D and R side.  That'll be THE state rep race in Bexar County in '06, and there is a great deal of uncertainty as to what is gonna happen tomorrow.

Do you need anyone to handle Harris County? (0.00 / 0)
I'll be out until 8:30, but I can handle it for you after that.  It would be fun.  When I was an Austin activist in the 1970s, we'd all go to the Electric Building to watch poll results come in -- they would post each individual precinct's results on a big wall, and everyone would stand around with $500 calculators (cost $20 today) figuring out what boxes were left out and what it would mean.  I've always thought an online forum would be a good substitute for those times, esp. in a statewide context.

Matt will be...
...covering Harris county races, but please feel free to help him out in the comments section, or if we've forgotten anyone in our rundown. Thanks!

you're right
There is CD 7, HD 146, and Bell/Gammage.  HD 146 could be most interesting, especially if either Al surprises the pundits.

CD 7 is partly interesting because outgoing YD President Rick Brennan is making his first foray as a campaign manager, for Henley (they are fellow teachers); but Murff has plenty of respect, too.  I have no idea how to call it.

If Gammage does better than 40% in Harris County, it's all over for Bell.

Election night
...at the Electric Building.  Wow, that just unlocked a long-sealed memory pocket and all of a sudden I could see some of our party's greybeards as the young gunslingers they were then.

Uh-oh.  Who's that being interviewed by all the TV crews using FILM in their cameras?  It's a young, bubbly Democratic matron - why it's Carole Keeton McClellan, back before she grew all those extra names.
