Soechting is NOT Resigning

By Andrew Dobbs

Sometimes on here I put up a little disclaimer saying that I do not speak for the Party, the Chairman, the Staff or Officers of the Texas Democratic Party. Today that is unnecessary, because I am speaking as a staffer for the Texas Democratic Party and a friend of Charles Soechting, its Chairman.

Apparantly Houston Democrats and Greg's Opinion are reporting that Texas Democratic Party Chairman Charles E. Soechting is resigning as Chairman. THIS IS ABSOLUTELY UNTRUE. I talked to Charles yesterday, talked to our Chief of Staff about 2 minutes ago and have talked to the Chairman's personal assistant. He is still the Chairman, he will be the Chairman until June of 2006 and he is planning on running for reelection at the convention at that point. Charles will serve out his entire term, and he is in perfect health.

I won't name any names, but I will say that it seems that some Craddick Ds are the ones who got this whole rumor started in the hopes of making it come true. This session Democrats have been more disciplined and more poised to take back the state than any time in recent memory. All of this boils down to the fact that our leadership has finally been gutsy enough to stand up to powerful Democrats who have a bad habit of selling out the party. Charles Soechting has become one of the most respected state chairman in the country as a result, and he’s not going anywhere when we are closer than ever to our ultimate goal.

So just as a recap-- Charles Soechting is still the Chairman, will be the Chairman for the next year and will, barring some unseen and dramatic event, be running for another term as Chairman. To those who'd rather have someone who will stay quiet in the face of DINOism, I'm sorry to disappoint.

Charles Soechting needs to go. He has been a disappointment. His lack of leadership has been his down fall. Surely the Democratic Party can do better.

I beg to differ, no name. Until this past January, I worked for the Texas Democratic Party. I admire the Chairman for his discipline, his commitment to the Democratic Party, and for the fact that he is not afraid to tell people in the national Party how it is in Texas. Charles Soechting has worked hard to build bridges within the Democratic structure in Texas, and frankly, we have him to thank for the last election where we picked up seats.

He is extremely intelligent, hard-working, and not afraid to call DINOs on their behavior. He can be a tough boss, but he gets results, and I am proud to have worked for him. I hope that Charles Soechting remains Chairman of the TDP for years to come, and I am certain he can help turn the tide in the upcoming state elections.

Andrea tell us:

"Charles Soechting has worked to build bridges within the Democratic structure, and frankly, we have him to thank for the last election when we picked up seats."

What?

He has tried to defeat longtime Democratic elected officials (bridge-building!) and plans to march forward with a vengance. Charles couldn't win a Democratic primary against a weak candidate (Alec Rhodes) and is now the sage of all things Democratic?! The man who wants to beat DNC member and Black Caucus Chairman Al Edwards and former SDEC Vice Chair Vilma Luna is building bridges? No wonder the trial lawyers are spending their cash on GOP races.

Yeah, let's burn all our bridges to the middle-of-the-road folks who used to fund the Party and now have become purists -- because that will make Democrats feel all warm and fuzzy. Not exactly the Calvin Guest/Bob Slagle model. And the master, Robert Strauss, would be flat-out embrassed, if he knew what a blog was.

Also, county-level Republicans won at least 112 new seats during the last election. The Democrats gained one seat in state races -- and, of course, none a statewide race. "(P)icked up seats"! Boy, that's new math.

And now the BOR crowd seems to gravitate toward a Chris Bell for Governor campaign. This was the guy who couldn't beat Chip Staniswalis in a state represenative race. Even after Staniswalis was convicted and sent to prison, Bell threw in the towel.

Why do the young Democrats so enjoy having their fannies' spanked? I have never heard of idealistic partisans who value purity more than victory since the young Democratics decided that the way to recapture the White House after a close Hubert Humphrey/Richard M. Nixon race was to nominate George McGovern.

Andrea and her fellow posters are obviously very smart and very passionate. But perhaps passion should be placed in the garage for a while and take those brains out for a ride.

Well said geriatric . . . It is Just Too Bad that the rumor is not true. . . I wish Charles Soechting would decide that it WAS in the best interest of the party and our legislative leaders for him to MOVE ON. I understand that our legislative leaders are more than a little put our by his style and lack of leadership (and I am not referring to the so-called Craddick D's - Dunnam, Coleman, Gallego, Van de Putte are all upset with him). We need someone who can actually organize, speak to a crowd and motivate, and raise money. Judging by the party's lack of resources, I would say that he has either turned our traditional donors off, or he is just incompetent. I personally think it is both. We need a new chairman. Anyone have any ideas?
