January 05, 2005Judge Mack KiddBy Byron LaMastersI didn't know him, but he was the former Travis County Democratic Party Chair, and was serving as a Justice of the 3rd District, Court of Appeals in Austin. Here's the message from the current Travis County Democratic Chair Chris Elliott on Judge Mack Kidd:
The makeup of the 3rd Court of appeals remained three Democrats and three Republicans after the 2004 elections where Democrat Jan Patterson and Repulican Bob Pemberton retained their seats. Rick Perry will surely appoint a Republican to shift the balance of the court to 4-2 GOP. Update: More at Grits for Breakfast. I certainly join Grits in wishing the family of Judge Kidd my condolences. Posted by Byron LaMasters at January 5, 2005 01:34 PM | TrackBack

It is confirmed that Mack Kidd committed suicide. No one seems to know why. I knew him well and I wish the best for Charlotte (his wife). Posted by: WhoMe? at January 6, 2005 11:19 PMMack was 5'4". A man that height receives constant ribbing about his manhood. It would be very tough to go through life that way and I would think the suicide rate is higher among shorter men. Posted by: Fly on the wall at January 8, 2005 11:47 AMI am not as tall as I would like and I get comments about being short. I can imagine the comments someone the height of Judge Kidd would have gotten. Maybe we should all be more thoughtful about our comments about others. I was not aware Judge Mack Kidd had committed suicide until the end of the funeral service. Frankly, the news stunned and deeply saddened me. Why on earth would such a prominent, successful and seemingly genuinely caring man take his own life? I did not hear any speaker at the funeral talk about Mack's relationship with Christ. Christ has carried me through many rough times. Maybe there is a lesson in there. Posted by: Jim at January 11, 2005 11:31 AMJustice Mack Kidd was 7 feet tall and as big as Texas as far as I am concerned. He had one of the biggest hearts of any lawyer I have even met. He genuinely cared and faught for all the PEOPLE of Texas. And, with his passing the people of Texas have lost one of their greatest sons. He was never concerned about his height and too say thet this had something to do with his actions is ludicrous. It has been over a week since this happened and I am still in utter disbelief. We probably will never know why he did what he did but I guarantee it was not over something as trivial as his height. When your spirit is as large as Mack's you feel things deeper than most. The deeper you feel the harder you fall when you are disapointed, hurt or ashamed. I only wish he would have reached out to someone who could have helped him see that no temporary problem deserves such a final solution. My Ol Buddy Mack, had a powerful swagger and alway s walked through life with head-high determination to do the right thing. I will never forget my old buddy, and I hope to see him again someday on the other side. Mack: rest in peace my friend. Posted by: Ol' Buddy at January 12, 2005 10:03 AM
