November 11, 2004Wingnut Values in Austin, TX?By Byron LaMastersSay it ain't so. Apparently, airing Saving Private Ryan on Veterans Day is controversial in this Jesusland country we live in now. E! Online reports that Austin is among the targets. Tom Coburn out to be happy. It looks like the American Family Association is behind this FCC fear-mongering. Do they hate our veterans? Anyway, if you want to complain to Austin's ABC affiliate KVUE, go here. Anyone have their phone number? Update: All Belo stations decided to not air Saving Private Ryan. Contact your local station here to complain. Here's the KVUE human resources guy listed: KVUE-TV And the Belo people: Belo Corporate Headquarters Belo Interactive

Funny how they won't show it in Austin but it's playing right as I write this here in Waco in widescreen HDTV. Now Waco is the real buckle on the bible belt compared to Austin. But really now, why the hell do any of you really care what movie they play? This isn't the same as Sinclair trying to swing the election. This is just another example of why the networks are dying out. I have DirecTV, NetFlix and Tivo. I watch what I want, when I want. I really couldn't care less what some network station manager decides to play. Posted by: Kent at November 11, 2004 09:43 PMYeah not a big deal. It would take me all of ten minutes to go pick up the movie at the Blockbuster 6 blocks away - it's just an example of idiotic political correctness that pisses me off a bit. Posted by: Byron L at November 11, 2004 10:07 PMMore than political correctness, it is political unpredicatability. The stations will not air it because they have no idea whether the FCC will go wingnut and fine them. One thing business abhors is unpredicatibility. THIS IS PROOF THAT RIGHT WING NUTS ARE ANTI-BUSINESS. Let this be a lesson - "moral purists" are bad for the economy by scaring businesses from making economic decisions. Posted by: WhoMe? at November 11, 2004 11:34 PMWhy does it matter? Creeping fear. Creeping government control over the media. That's why it matters. I had other things to do, so I wouldn't have watched, but I called anyway. Especially since they decided to replace it with Lethal Weapon (X). I mean, really, their excuse is that it would have violence and bad language before 7 pm. So they start their movie an hour later, with an equally violent movie. What a crock. Posted by: ERic at November 12, 2004 11:13 AMLet me reiterate: Creeping fear. A chunk of the US has suddenly woken up and realized that the Religious Right/Christianists are a long way toward radically changing our country. But not everyone gets it yet. This is one more case, and it's time that we start fighting every one of these. It sucks, and I've been trying to ignore it for a long time. I can't any longer. Posted by: ERic at November 12, 2004 11:16 AMWe got "Hoosiers" here in Phoenix instead of "Saving Private Ryan." It's hard to imagine that in Arizona, albeit one of those red states, the need to avoid bad words and blood could trump a tribute to veterans. That definitely screams out "Wingnut!" to me. Posted by: Aemilia at November 12, 2004 11:34 AMI thought one of the main planks of the Republican platform was "getting governemnt out of people's lives". Oh wait, I forgot to read the exception clause I guess! Posted by: grnwayrob at November 13, 2004 05:23 PMYou would think the film they were trying to ban was Saving Ryan's Privates. Posted by: Tim Z. at November 14, 2004 02:09 AMAiring "Saving Private Ryan" may show how ghastly war is, and I guess a lot of people are content to be armchair generals. My grandfather was in the D-Day invasion. It was pretty grotesque, as most wars are. Posted by: Andrea M. at November 14, 2004 07:35 PM
