October 06, 2004That's ThreeBy Byron LaMastersDick Cheney lied last night when he said that he met John Edwards for the first time before the debate. We immediately learned that they met twice; at a prayer breakfast in 2001, and at Elizabeth Dole's swearing in ceremony (as opposed to the Patrick Leahy swearing "at" ceremony this summer). Now, the Gadflyer reports on a third meeting before last night:
It doesn't really matter to Dick Cheney, whether it's big issues like Iraq and Halliburton, or small issues like factcheck.com and how many times he's met John Edwards. I would just like to quote Andrew here when talking about the CBS memo: "Perhaps these documents were recreated from someone's memory of the originals or perhaps they are real after all. Still, the point is- fake or not fake Bush shirked his obligations to his country while serving in the Guard." Taking that exact same tack, perhaps Cheney lied about meeting, or perhaps Cheney was simply mistaken. Edwards surely didn't bother to correct him, so maybe he couldn't think of a time he met Cheney either. The point is that Edwards was rarely in his committee meetings, and was known in his home state as Senator Gone. And lets continue: please notice that none of these encounters were at work in the Senate! A TV show, a prayer breakfast, a swearing in. Not on the floor of the Senate!
