Max Sandlin Leads Gohmert

By Byron LaMasters

The latest polling in the race:

A Bennett, Petts & Blumenthal poll; conducted 9/7-9 for Rep. Max Sandlin (D); surveyed 400 likely voters; margin of error +/- 4.7% (release, 9/16). Tested: Sandlin and state Rep. Louie Gohmert (R).

General Election Matchup

Now: Sandlin 47%, Gohmert 43%, Undecided 10%.

May: Sandlin 41%, Gohmert 44%, Undecided 15%.

Donate to Sandlin here. This is a very conservative district, but Sandlin has the NRA endorsement and a strong campaign team.

Yay Max!

Yeah, I've been very excited at the prospects of some of the targetted Democrats like Max, Frost, Edwards. And Max's success goes back to something I and several folks said during the redistricting fight: These are conservative-to-moderate Democrats whom the voters recognize as serving them well and as like themselves. On a recent visit back to Longview (part of the area Max needs to win), I got the impression folks liked Sandlin. I think Sandlin's running a solid, positive campaign. Both Gohmert and Sandlin are from nearby towns of Tyler and Marshall. Here's hoping the dislike of things Tyler in Longview plays to Sandlin's favor here. :)

I believe that Sandlin will carry Nacodoches and Lufkin. Sandlin can't be tagged as a liberal (he recently agreed with letting the assault rifle ban lapse), and he's been ardent in representing East Texas, not the Democratic Party per se. Gohmert, on the other hand, is flaunting his party credentials and his party chums.

Tyler, Smith County, is the most populated in the district and is also the most conservative. Tyler voted almost 80% Republican in the last election, bad news for Max Sandlin. Move east to Longview, Gregg Co, which is the next more populated county in the district. There they voted over 60% Republican in the last election. With a strong turn out in those 2 counties alone Gohmert almost has the thing sealed up before it gets to Marshall, Harrison Co. With Marshall about 60%-40% in favor of the Democrats Mr. Sandlin will need to pull votes from the more conservative counties. I'm sorry but once you head south From Marshall the next biggest county is Nacogdoches which is evenly split so no help to either candidate. Meaning Sandlin will win the less populated counties but it won't be enough to make up for Smith and Gregg counties. I mean take Rusk Co. for example. The largest town in that county is Henderson with barely 9,000. Compare that to 90,000 in Tyler (not the rest of Smith Co.) alone and 75,000 in Longview. So inorder for Max to win he'll need to pull votes away from Louie in his home town of Marshall which is possible but not likely.

Max Sandlin has it all over Gohmert in the Northern, Southern and Eastern part of his district. Gohmert has completely written off Lufkin and he should write off the rest of his District. I was in attendence at both live debates (Nacogdoches & Tyler) Max was in complete control. Max answered each question with thought and conviction, He definitely knows where he stands on all the issues. Mr. Gohmert got off track and even confused his own supporters at the debate. WAKE UP SMITH COUNTY (especially TYLER). On to Tuesday
