September 08, 2004Log Cabin is Relevent After AllBy Byron LaMastersThe Log Cabin Republicans came to their senses last night as their executive committee voted 22-2 to not endorse George W. Bush for President. The New York Times:
Absolutely. The Bush administration filp-flopped on gay marriage. In 2000, it was a state issue. In 2004, it's a federal issue. They flip-flopped on the compassionate and uniter crap. They used gays and lesbian as a wedge to divide Americans on social issues in order to distract people from the critical issues where the Bush administration has failed such as the economy and Iraq. Anyway, Log Cabin is now relevent for another election cycle. If they had chosen to endorse President Bush, they would have lost the little credibility in the GLBT community that the have in the first place. Kos has more. I don't knowe if you can say that the Bush administration has "failed" on the economy and Iraq. As far as the Bushes are concerned, they've succeeded perfectly. After all, their goal is simply to make themselves and their friends as wealthy as possible, and all other considerations (i.e. the lives of everybody else) by damned! Kerry is the lesser of two evils, in my opinion, when it comes to gay rights...but he is no gay-rights savior. I am dissapointed that Stonewall Democrats and HRC have endorsed him. They lost their integrity when they did so, and showed themselves to be mainly Democratic partisan hacks. At least LCR has the balls to call a snake a snake. Log Cabin endorsed Bush in 2000 based on his using the words "uniter" and "compassion" without a getting a single promise in return (ok, Bush is the first Republican President to appoint openly gay people to government positions, but that's small beans). In 1996 LCR endorsed Bob Dole even though he returned their checks. Kerry / Edwards have the best record on GLBT issues than any national major party ticket in American history - they support the HRC and Stonewall on every single issue except marriage. To say that HRC and Stonewall have "lost their integrity" in endorsing Kerry is simply disingenuous, rediculous and hypocritical. If however, an activist Supreme Court votes to make all states recognize gay marriage because of a gay couples prior marriage ina gay marriage friendly state like Massachusetts, then the Congress should act on an amendment, but right now one is not needed. I do however forsee in the future a case winding its way the Supremes.
