September 29, 2004Beldar Won't Like thisBy Byron LaMastersOver the weekend, the conservative Beldar Blog posted that "Kerry's no Ike", differenciating how in his opinion Dwight Eisenhower's election in 1952 in the middle of a war is from the 2004 election. As he concludes, Bedlar writes:
I could offer my reply, but why don't I just let Ike's son, John Eisenhower do the talking:
The trust given to John Kerry by a lifetime registered Republican for fifty years, who saw his father's Republican Party take a wild and radical turn to the right in recent years is no small issue. This is not someone putting blind faith or reckless trust in John Kerry, but rather someone who despite a lifetime of supporting Republicans, has seen the Bush administration take a rapid departure away from the leadership role that America has played in the world since World War II. Will anyone listen? Or will John Eisenhower just get the Ron Reagan Jr. from the right? Posted by Byron LaMasters at September 29, 2004 09:58 AM | TrackBack

If todays party is soo different from the party of his father; why is the Democratic Party's message today the same as our President Truman's message given at the 1948 DNC? Change the date references and the change the dollar amounts and its the same message. It would seem that your message would have changed if the Republican Party had changed as much as John E. thinks it has, otherwise your party would not be responding to those changes John E. indicated. How come Kerry isn't buying ads in Missouri. A Democrat can't win without winning Missouri. Why isn't the female vote polling your way? How come our President is polling up 6% with the black vote. Remember that each % up our President polls means more blue states turning red. Remember NJ has many of our drug companies located there and Kerry is wanting to import drugs from Canada, putting Americans out of work in NJ. How bout that Kerry...he's a Burnt Orange fan after all. I hear he's comming to UT to see where the Aggies play. Good post, Byron, well argued by both you and John Eisenhower. (And thanks, as always, for the link.) As surprising as it is to see Ike's son take this position, though, I can't say that it undercuts the point of my original post -- which was that Ike had the kind of rare record, either for a politician or anyone else, that would justify someone taking him on faith when he says, "Trust me and I'll fix this war." With due respect, the last time the U.S. Congress gave that kind of trust to him -- after Sens. Kerry & Harkin returned from Nicaragua with promises in hand from Daniel Noriega about how he'd line up if only the Congress denied funding for the contras, which the Congress promptly did -- Noriega was in Moscow two weeks later wrapping up his $200 million aid package from the Soviets. They could have practically tattooed "SUCKER!" in red letters on Kerry's and Harkin's foreheads, and Congress promptly reversed itself. I don't think even Sen. Kerry would point to this as one of his better career moments. The problem is, there isn't anything remotely comparable to what Ike did in World War II for Sen. Kerry to point to now to justify him in saying, "Trust me!" Best regards, as always -- and Hook 'Em! Posted by: Beldar at September 29, 2004 12:48 PMAck -- Preview is your friend, Beldar. Meant Ortega, not Noriega (both unsavory, from opposite ends of the political spectrum). Here's a link to a fairly comprehensive Boston Globe discussion of the incident I was referencing.
