Some Numbers

By Karl-Thomas Musselman

Here is some interesting figures that were passed on to me from sources inside the back-rooms of the Convention Stage.

John Kerry's Acceptance Speech had about $500,000 of polling and focus groups done on it to determine the most effective message that voters across the spectrum would like. That's info you won't hear most anywhere else.

Besides that, info that had now gone into a press release from the campaign is as follows.

On Wednesday, the campaign shattered its previous online fundraising
record, raising over $3.3 million dollars in one day, only to crush it on
Thursday with a total of $5.6 million raised -- bringing its two-day total to
$8.9 million. At times during Kerry's speech, johnkerry.com received over
5,000 hits per second.

Wow, I didn't think it was possible, but CNN's new poll out shows Kerry getting a negative bounce(or more like a thud) from his convention. I'm going to love hearing the spin from these new results.

This from the 'girlie men' powderblue layout of Republican bloggers. grr....

Posted by: Karl-T at August 1, 2004 05:10 PM

I have to credit Burnt Orange Report for a little inspiration on the title of my blog, plus I am a huge UCLA football/basketball homer aka "the gutty little bruins". Their colors are powder blue and yellow/white. I agree though with the characterization of "girlie men" colors though :^( I like the burnt orange colors of UT. I haven't checked the preseason mags yet, how is UT football looking this year so far? Can you believe Ricky Williams giving up pro football to hit the bong? I can't believe he did that.

Posted by: Allan Bartlett at August 1, 2004 05:34 PM

Yeah, I guess the yellow/white report wouldn't be all that great. I think that UT is rated like 6th/7th depending on which report you look at as far as ranking in the Big 12 goes. Not the most outstanding, but oh well.

Posted by: Karl-T at August 1, 2004 05:39 PM

Yeah I figured that much. When Kerry listed all the people he met in Vietnam, he ended up listing all the swing states. Hah

Texas is ranked 8th in the Coaches Poll and 2nd in the Big 12 to who else but OU. Who sucks, btw. Speaking of UCLA, I have disliked them ever since their 66-3 drubbing of us at home back in '97 and have relished in the fact that Cade McNown has been a bust in the NFL and that they have enjoyed very little success since '98.

"Can you believe Ricky Williams giving up pro football to hit the bong? I can't believe he did that."

It really doesn't surprise me that this is coming from a republican. Having followed Ricky's career since his freshman year at UT I know full well that Ricky does not care about superficial things such as money and fame. I also know that his heart and soul were never fully into football (at least at the pro level) and despite all that he still won the Heisman and was until now probably the best RB in the NFL. I'm happy that Ricky has gone on to bigger and better things and is going to do something with his life that he truly enjoys and that will actually make a difference in people's lives (not just a difference on someone's fantasy football team).

I'm with you Sal. I'm just hoping we finally hit rock bottom this year. Karl Dorrell has been a bad hire. If we come in last in the PAC 10 this year, I wouldn't be surprised. I'm just hoping for a victory over USC this year, if we can do that, then the season will be a little easier to bear. That 98' team was a great one except for that last game against Miami. Who's UT's QB this year?

Posted by: Allan Bartlett at August 2, 2004 12:01 AM

Vince Young

Posted by: Andrew D at August 2, 2004 01:14 PM

Don't worry, Allan - I think Stanford will reliably be last in the PAC 10. We were terrible last year, and I haven't heard of any new recruits to turn things around...

btw, that CNN/USA Today/Random Media Outlet/Gallup poll is looking more and more like an aberration. The Newsweek, Zogby, and CBS News Polls all show a (small) bounce for Kerry.

Posted by: Sal D at August 2, 2004 11:04 PM

oh yeah, i forgot the ABC News/Washington Post poll.
