It does look like Kerry / McCain is out of the question - something that I think is a good thing. On paper, Kerry / McCain seems to be unbeatable. In practice, as I've mentioned before, bipartisan unity tickets have been absolute disasters. 1840 - The Whigs get William Henry Harrison elected, but he dies after a month in office and John Tyler vetoes most of Whig legislative agenda. 1864 - Andrew Johnson replaced Abraham Lincoln after he is assassinated and refuses to cooperate with Republicans in Congress on Reconstruction until he is impeached and nearly removed from office. Do I think that a Kerry / McCain presidency would be as disasterous? Not at all, but the historical precendent for such a ticket is not promising. I'm still a fan of Edwards. I voted for John Edwards in the primary, because I wanted to send a message that he ought to be selected as Kerry's running mate. Posted by Byron LaMasters at June 12, 2004 04:11 PM | TrackBack

I agree about Edwards. We need him and he'll help win the South. Even though Edwards dropped out before our Primary, I was shocked how many of our voters cast their votes for him, which should send a clear message that his leadership has value to people. Personally, I wanted to scream every time I heard people talking about "Kerry/McCain." I am not a John McCain fan, and I think it would piss a lot of Democrats off to have a "bi-partisan ticket." For one thing, as the one to cast a vote in the event of a tie in the senate, would a Republican veep vote for the President's agenda or his party's? And WHY oh WHY give anyone in the GOP a launching pad to run for President? Although I could see the twisted logic, it didn't appeal to me. Posted by: Vince Leibowitz at June 12, 2004 06:07 PM
