July 07, 2003Justice DeLayed is Justice DeniedBy Jim DallasThere may be some Burnt Orange readers who may see Texas redistricting as a novelty, a numbers game, a soap opera, or maybe a little bit of all three. I've got news - it's really a very serious issue. Under the King/Grusendorf map passed out of the redistricting committee on Saturday, my hometown of Galveston will be moved out of the 9th district (Galveston has been an anchor of the 9th going back for over a hundred years) into a reconfigured 22nd district dominated by conservatives living in Katy, Sugarland, and Fort Bend County. And represented by none other than... Tom DeLay. I will go from living in a 50-50 district to a district which is 75 percent Republican. And I won't even have the comfort of knowing that, even if my congresscritter is a Republican (and there are some good Republicans), he'd be trying to represent me. Tom DeLay doesn't represent his district, he represents himself, his fat cat friends, and the very worst of the right-wing reactionaries. Consider this an open invitation to my pity party, gentlemen. But also know that if this redistricting passes, I will be working very, very hard to find a quality challenger to Mr. DeLay, and barring that, I'll be waiting in the wings to run in 2008, because I'm not going down without a fight. Boo Hoo. When I lived in Alameda, California, I was represented by Ron Dellums (D - Cuba). Dellums was an open admirer of the dictator Fidel Castro, and believed strongly that the U.S. should be a communist state just like Cuba. Compared to him, Delay is a moderate. It's the way the system works. At least the Republicans in California didn't run away and hide rather than let the legislature conduct business. You should be proud to be represented by such people. Posted by: AC at July 7, 2003 10:32 PMI know its a serious issue. But I have to admit, the soap opera aspect fascinates me. I used to work at the Lege, and it frustrated me to no end how politics almost always trumped good policy. But it was always interesting to see the different angles people took on stuff, due not to policy differences (sometimes I despaired of ever finding more than a handful of legislators who were genuinely interested in policy implications) but to political ones.
