November 08, 2004Only in Texas...By Byron LaMastersOk, maybe in Kansas, Utah or *insert your favorite Jesusland state here*, but in case anyone had any doubt before, we have complete morons on our state board of education. I missed this last week amid my avoid-everything-political mini-hiatus, but Roman Candles covered the details of their latest moves. Take a look at some of the textbook changes proposed by Texas State Board of Education member Terri Leo (R-Spring):
Perhaps worse than gay-bashing though, is some board member's insistance that the effectiveness of condoms be deemphasized:
One word: Morons. Of course condoms aren't 100% effective, and that ought to be stressed, but tell kids the truth. Terri Leo's interest in the increased "depression, illegal drug use and suicide" of gays and lesbians only serves to scare kids that may be unsure of their sexual orientation, and encourage discrimination against openly gay or lesbian students. Let me put it this way. Here's a minor twist on Terri Leo's comments regarding homosexuality in coming up with a definition for a heterosexual sexual orientation:
Sarah has the final update on the textbook situation. In a rare moment of sanity, the board excluded Leo's request, but they still failed to include comprehensive information about birth control and preventing STD's:
So, sorta good news. I don't care about the marriage issue as much as I do about contraceptive information and homophobic language. Texas law defines marriage between a man and a woman, and I disagree with it, but I respect it as the law of the land. But Leo's proposed langauge was solely based on right-wing ideology and pseudoscience. Not including information about contraceptives is a pure failure of protecting the public health by the state. Teaching kids proper use of contraceptives prevents unwanted pregnancies, prevents abortions and saves lives. It's that simple. Posted by Byron LaMasters at November 8, 2004 11:19 PM | TrackBack

First, they came for the homosexuals (defense of marriage ammendment, etc.), and I said nothing . . because I was not a homosexual. Next, they came for the muslims (Patriot Act), and I said nothing . . . because I was not a muslim. Next, they came for the immigrants (take your pick of right-wing immigrant-bashing plans), and I said nothing . . . because I was not an immigrant. And then . . . they came for me . . . and there was no one else left to saay anything. DO NOT BE NAIVE. It can happen here in America too!! Be vigilant!!!! Leo wanted to replace those sentences with: "Opinions vary on why homosexuals, lesbians and bisexuals as a group are more prone to self-destructive behaviors like depression, illegal drug use and suicide." If I had schoolboards rewriting textbooks for the sole purpose of trashing me, I'd feel pretty damn depressed too... Posted by: Brad Reed at November 9, 2004 05:06 PM It's not often I get quite so wound up about anything. My views are usually "That's your opinion, this is mine, let's agree to disagree and move on." That's all well and good until someone takes it far too far. What did Leo think she could ever possibly accomplish by excluding 600 million people on the earth by simply saying to the world She has shown blatant disregard for 11% of the students she is supposed to be helping. Not only that, she reveals the childish, mis-informed, homophobe that she is. Certainly not the kind of person I'd want on my education board. Another point which brought itself to my attention is that the proposed changes to the books have nothing to do with heterosexuality. Instead of teaching kids the way things work in the real world and that you can fall in love with anyone anytime, it would have plainly turned year-group after year-group of students into gay-hating, ignorant, parents at 16 maybe dying before their own parents due to a disease that they may not know they have. Well done there then Terri, you really thought that through. As the proposal didn't pass, you may think I'm working myself up for nothing. Fair enough, your entitled to your opinion but I live in the UK and over here some people are more accepting than the USA but there are still people around who think it's okay to destroy something because it doesn't suit them at the time. Even that can stop a gay man like me coming out of the closet for fear of immense rejection. God help Texas' gay community if this nightmare had come true. Posted by: Nick at June 8, 2005 12:22 PM
