Kinky Friedman Does His Best Judge Roy Moore Impression

By Damon McCullar

Kinky Friedman did a interview with ABC's This Week recently (if the ABC link doesn't work, try here). It was an interesting interview. He starts out by saying that we need to get the Ten Commandments, "I might have to call them the Ten Suggestions", in the schools. I seem to remember the Supremes saying that you can't do that. Granted that the venue for the Ten Commandments in that case was a county courthouse, but I think the ruling would be extended to the classroom. Another question I have about that is, what does the teacher tell his or her first-grader when he or she asks "What does 'You shall not commit adultery' mean" or more to the point "What does adultery mean?"

The other item that Mr. Friedman suggested was that we have non-denominational prayer in schools. This subject has again and again been struck down by the Supremes except in very, very limited cases. The biggest problem with that is that there are people in this country that don't believe in God what-so-ever. What are those folks supposed to do? Get sent out of the classroom? There's an old saying that says "As long as there are tests, there will be prayer in school" and that's fine by me Offering up a silent, personal prayer at anytime during the day doesn't offend anyone else's religious beliefs.

Finally, Mr. Friedman says "To paraphrase Ronald Reagan ... 'the other guys got the experience, that's why I'm running.' That's exactly why I am running". So Mr. Friedman does admit that he has no expericence in government. Maybe that explains why he's not voted in so many years. Or maybe it explains why when asked about tutition deregulation as he walked through campus this spring he had no idea what it was. I just paid my tutition bill. I know very well what tutition deregulation means.

So at the end of the day, how is a candidate that supports prayer in school, posting the 10 commandments in public and who quotes Ronald Reagan the progressive. I don't get it.

Kelly, make that Snooks, will explain it to you soon.

Posted by: whiskeydent at August 22, 2005 04:25 PM

Jeez, chill the hell out. First off, quoting Reagan as a quotable guy means nothing other than the man appreciates a good quip.

Second, don't take things so literally. I find it hard to believe that someone who 1) is Jewish, 2) has made a career having fun with religion, a la the classic country hit "They Don't Make Jews Like Jesus Anymore", 3) signs off with "May the God of your choice bless you," and 4) suggests we call them the "10 Suggestions" rather than "Commandments" is a threat to non-believers. At least it's a candidate on the left who can talk frankly and genuinely about faith.

As for his progressive cred, granted, the guy hasn't fleshed out a full platform yet, but he has talked about reforming the death penalty and supporting biodiesel and alternative energy to reduce reliance on oil and gas.

Let's see the Dem take on either of those issues. Plus, on a personal note, his pledge to make Willie head of the Texas Rangers has real appeal. And he opposes the declawing of cats.

And I'll give a first-time candidate a pass on not knowing what tuition deregulation is. On his next campus appearance if he still doesn't know and doesn't have the right answer, I'll join you in dogging him for it.

I guarantee you what ever issue positions he stakes out will be more progressive than whatever the Dem does.

Now, I may not vote for guy, but I have no doubt his presence in the race is a good thing for Texas politics, and not just for amusement either.

But this criticism is just kind of a lame swipe over nothing. If you just want to say, screw Kinky because he's not running under the D banner, come out and say it.

I have no explanation whatsoever for this odd channeling of dead and discombobulated Republicans. We all have our little oddities. Some of them Republican in origin.

Isn't Alison Bell a Republican by the way? If we are going to start pulling all the Republican ghosts out of the closet, let's pull all of them out. Not just the ones we want to.

Posted by: Baby Snooks at August 22, 2005 04:35 PM

http://www.kinkyfriedman.com/blog/2005/08/yesterday-kinky-appeared-on-abc-news.php

How about posting the entire interview instead of just picking the comments you feel make him look bad and make Chris Bell look good?

Posted by: Baby Snooks at August 22, 2005 04:54 PM

I linked the full video clip from ABC's This Week. Feel free to click on through and watch it.

Posted by: Damon C. at August 22, 2005 05:02 PM

Also, Allison Bell isn't running for anything right now, as far as I know, so her politics is her own buisness and no one else's. Mr. Friedman is running for governor so if he like quoting Republicans, then you can expect someone to pick up on it.

Further, Mr. Snooks, I thought your link was broken, but it turns out that the page your refernece on the Kinky Blog doesn't work either. The interview is available at www.abc.com/thisweek or you can click through the hyper-link I provided.

I don't doubt either that Mr. Friedman's presence is good for the process, but you can't expect to sow a bumper crop like the This Week interview was and not expect for hay to be made.

Finally, the post is what it is: my take on what Mr. Friedman had to say. Whether it makes him look bad or anyone else look good is in the mind of the reader.

Posted by: Damon C at August 22, 2005 05:45 PM

I just cannot wait until the election when Friedman will get more votes for the Dem candidate. Something tells me that even after that humiliation they will still be worrying more about what's happening with Republicans than the mess that is their own party.

Posted by: Jeff at August 22, 2005 06:14 PM

This link should work; the transcript won't be on the ABC site for much longer without some digging.

Thanks for the heads up!

Posted by: Damon C at August 22, 2005 06:23 PM

He also commented that he supports gay marriage which may not matter to you but does matter to quite a few others. Chris Bell has said we are not ready for it. How nice of him to decide what we are ready for and what we are not.

As for Alison Bell, if she believed in her husband and his adopted party, she would have become a Democrat as well.

Both parties are a mess if you ask me. As are bloggers who assume names and gender on the basis of an isp. Isn't that a violation of my privacy?

Posted by: Baby Snooks at August 22, 2005 06:33 PM

BS, who the hell are you to presume anything about Alison Bell? Can you please shut up already?? Nothing you say makes any sense! You're obviously new to this game and don't have the balls to reveal yourself ... and then you talk smack about a candidate's wife? The funny thing is that if you were to ever say that crap to Alison Bell, she'd rip you a new one and send you back to your mama. In New York.

Posted by: Marie at August 22, 2005 06:52 PM

Anyone remotely familiar with the MoveableType software would know that it collects the ip address of commenters, which can easily be viewed by the owners of the blog. Anyone can find out the city where an ip address is located by doing a simple online search.

If New Yorkers like BS want to support Kinky Friedman, they're more than welcome to, but yall shouldn't tell us who is best for Texas.

Posted by: No BS at August 22, 2005 07:50 PM

"If New Yorkers like BS want to support Kinky Friedman, they're more than welcome to, but yall shouldn't tell us who is best for Texas."

Seems like "yall" down there need to learn how to read:

"I have the right to have more than one residence. And be a registered voter where my primary residence is. Lots of people from Houston also have residences in New York. Some have residences all over the place. And still vote in Houston. I have another residence in New Mexico. And spend a lot of time in Los Angeles. That doesn't make me less a Texan. Or less a registered voter."

That was posted in response to the Gallego announcement right here in BOR. To further clarify it, I am a registered voter in Harris County.

"The funny thing is that if you were to ever say that crap to Alison Bell, she'd rip you a new one and send you back to your mama. In New York."

The funny thing is you seem to be avoiding the fact of the matter. She is a Republican.

You seem to take issue with everyone else who is a Republican, Marie, but not Alison Bell. Who are you? Her sister?

Posted by: Baby Snooks at August 22, 2005 08:44 PM

Jeanne Pirro called. Says she wants her shtick back.

Posted by: Marie at August 22, 2005 09:22 PM

Anyone who wants to take on Alison Bell better bring more to the party than a lame screen name from New York City.

Posted by: Jason Stanford at August 23, 2005 09:45 AM

baby snooks, i do not know who you are, but your moniker certainly says a lot about your maturity. to attack a candidate's wife like you did is so incredibly low class. maybe that's the way they do things in new york, but not here, baby. what a moron. while i'm not alison's sister, i will gladly assist her when she punches out your pathetic, immature, baby self.

Posted by: marky at August 23, 2005 11:01 AM

I think the knucle headed democrats are scares shitless by Kinky. I love it.

Posted by: PGH at August 23, 2005 12:25 PM

PGH,

I agree that they are. But please don't forget that you are a bad Democrat for not supporting Bell, how dare you!

Posted by: Grube at August 23, 2005 12:32 PM

Wow, I love all this, the primaries are more than 6 months away and we are already threatening violence against one another. Woo HOO! Personally, I support whole heartedly what BDA ( my fellow contributor to www.cruzbustamante.com) says, but I am more distrubed about the democrats who support Bell. One would think if a Dem wanted to make a REAL difference it would be as running for lite guv or even a smaller office like AG. Isn't Bell a lawyer anyways? Personally I would like to see Joe Jamail run for governor as a democrat. If anyone saw his Texas Monthly Talks interview in April you would be equally impressed.

Posted by: JChap at August 23, 2005 02:42 PM

Isn't Joe Jamail the "outside counsel" for Vinson & Elkins in their "little mess" involving Enron? Thanks but no thanks.

Posted by: Baby Snooks at August 23, 2005 03:37 PM

Grube:

Nobody's a bad Democrat for not supporting Bell. I think I'm a damn good D and I'm keeping my options open.

Some people do ask to have their Democrat-cred questioned when they work for/support a candidate who is, in fact, NOT A DEMOCRAT, and who they know damn well will take votes from a Democrat.

Posted by: scooby doo at August 23, 2005 03:59 PM

"Some people do ask to have their Democrat-cred questioned when they work for/support a candidate who is, in fact, NOT A DEMOCRAT, and who they know damn well will take votes from a Democrat."

They are not voting for a Democrat because they are not willing to vote for the Democratic candidate. What is it that you and others don't understand about that? Quite a few of us do not like Chris Bell. Some of us would vote for Rick Perry before we would vote for him. We are Democrats. But we are not about to be told as some would like who we will vote for if we are "loyal" Democrats. Even the state party chair apparently is not 100% behind Chris Bell or he wouldn't have expressed interest in Kinky Friedman challenging Bell. You got a problem with that? Take it up with Charles Soechting.

There are a lot of Democrats who will not support Chris Bell and will not vote for him. There are a growing number of Republicans who will not support Rick Perry and will not vote for him.

People are looking at Kinky Friedman as an Independent. And as an option to get the state of Texas back to the people's business instead of the business of the special interests. Kinky Friedman will indeed take quite a few votes away from Chris Bell. And from Rick Perry. Most of us are tired of the same old politics and tired of being told to wave the little partisan flag. If the politicans want to continue their little war, let them wage it themselves. The people have finally had enough. Of the war and of the politicians.

You want a Democrat in the Governor's Mansion? You better find someone other than Chris Bell.

You want to wave your flag at me and tell me I'm not a good Democrat? Take your flag and stick it where the sun don't shine.

Posted by: Baby Snooks at August 23, 2005 04:45 PM

baby snookems, why don't you just go to the pataki blog and spew your politcial BS there? my guess is that only reason you maintain your residency, and supposedly your voting rights, in texas is because this is an income-tax free state. hypocrite.

Posted by: marky at August 23, 2005 05:06 PM

I pay taxes everywhere. Just because I don't support Chris Bell I'm "obviously" a Republican? You must have done very well with logic. Or did you take logic? Did you even go to college? High school? Kindergarten? No offense but I've had enough of the personal attacks from a bunch of Chris Bell supporters whose IQs probably register in the negative range. Along with his. And his wife's. And his campaign people. Who seem to be the majority of the Bell supporters in here and on the other blogs. The rest of us are on to you.

Take your flag and your candidate and stick both where the sun don't shine.

Posted by: Baby Snooks at August 23, 2005 05:17 PM

oh really, baby? you pay taxes everywhere? in every state in which you have a residence? tell me, how much state income tax do you pay in texas? are you really that stupid? i don't typically resort to personal attacks, but since you brought it on, let me just tell you this:: I don't care if you're a republican, democrat, independent or other, and you should not assume that I am any of the above. and I think you're one insignifacant, sick f*** for even trying to imply anything about my IQ, much less a texas gubenatorial candidate's wife. get a life. argue the issues or just crawl back into you diaper and stay there.

Posted by: marky at August 23, 2005 05:40 PM

I pay income tax on income in California, New Mexico, and New York. Any more questions, sick f***? Maybe you'd like to verify it with my accountant? I don't pay tax on income in Texas because I don't have to. Maybe I should. And ask the state comptroller, who will probably always be the state comptroller because everyone will continue to vote for her because every time she runs she has a new name and everyone thinks they are getting rid of her not realizing she's changed her name again, that the check was to start a fund to educate people like you on how to talk to your elders with respect when she couldn't figure out what the check was for.

You certainly don't talk like any men I know. You talk more like a high school boy in the locker room. Mr. Macho. You probably bully the smaller boys. Thinking it makes you look tough. Talk rough, look tough. Sounds like a Bell campaign motivational tape.

I'm probably old enough to be your mother and if you called me a sick f*** in public, I'd slap the living shit out of you, you little twerp.

Like it or not, Alison Bell is fair game. All is fair in love and politics. She more than anyone should know that. She's probably quite used to having people take pot shots at her. And believe me, quite a few do.

The issues? The only issue here is that no one seems to get it. Quite a few Democrats will not support Chris Bell for governor and quite a few Democrats will not vote for Chris Bell for governor. Some wouldn't vote for him for dog catcher. Unless the Democrats can come up with someone more acceptable, quite a few Democrats will support and vote for Kinky Friedman. And if the two parties manage to keep him off the ballot, we will just sigh and accept that we will have four more years of Rick Perry. Because in the end, Rick Perry would be better than Chris Bell. Even then we will not vote for Chris Bell.

Got it?

Posted by: Baby Snooks at August 24, 2005 12:20 AM

baby, baby, baby. the good news is that this thread is about to die under its own weight and the fact that we have gotten significantly off topic. but i just have to let you know a couple of things first: my grandmother was born in 1894, so that would make you 111 years old, right? and, since i'm not a boy, i've never been allowed into the boys' locker rooms, though i may have thought that'd be fun in my younger days. see, things aren't always as they appear. same is true in politics, so don't assume that you always know everything, k? now, go crawl back into your Depends.

Posted by: marky at August 24, 2005 10:15 AM

"...my grandmother was born in 1894, so that would make you 111 years old.."

You desperately need to take a course in reading skills:

"I'm probably old enough to be your mother"

Girls can be bullies too. Girls should learn to respect their elders as well. Mothers and grandmothers.

As for this thread dying under its own weight, most likely that is what will happen to the Bell campaign as well. Its dead weight.

Posted by: Baby Snooks at August 24, 2005 12:40 PM

ok, so you're old enough to be my mother. if you were my mother, you would have died when you were 86 years old. oh, and i should have respect for you WHY?
