Comments: Something Fishy in my E-mail

Although I did not get a John Kerry HIV-AIDS thing, for the longest time my personal was on the Gephardt and Edwards list group for some reason, and even the University Democrats account started to get their news from "Students 4 Edwards" without me asking for it. It is fishy

I've been on the Gephardt and Edwards email lists despite never asking to be added. I haven't cancelled them because I occationally like to read what they're saying, but needless to say I support Howard Dean. I'm not too worried about how it happened. My guess is the campaigns got the email from my blog, but it could also be from one of the many liberal organizations who's email list I'm on. I'm not going to sweat it. I try not to get too worked up about spam emails, because if I did I'd probably go nuts, so I just don't. Heh.

Nothing here, not that I've signed up for any gay advocacy group lists. I'm purely Dean campaign, ACLU, and the Sierra Club when it comes to e-mail lists. Additionally, I hate organizations that equate HIV/AIDS with gay advocacy. I think they're separate issues that must be addressed separately. I actually e-mailed the Gephardt campaign explaining why AIDS in Africa and needle exchange programs didn't belong on the GLBT page. According to the read receipt I got back, someone read it, but I got no reply and the site remained unchanged for months. Finally (as I check now) they've separated it properly.

Agreed. It's one thing to tap into an advocacy's group's email list.

It's another thing to make a phantom connection between AIDS and gays.

I mean, let's just say I'd be pissed off pretty royally if I were linked to John Kerry's platform on herpes (presumably) because I am a heterosexual.

Then again, I guess it's context and connotation, I guess. If I got an e-mail from Kerry about a "fatherhood initiative" or whatever, I suppose I would not be taken aback.

Sorry if I went a little nutsy.

Just wanted to comment on the whole AIDS/homosexual thing. I think the entire stigma being associated with AIDS (the ploy that it is somehow ONLY found in the male homosexual population at the very least continually correlated with it) is still quite rampant. When I did my undergrad studies I picked a study regarding "homophobia". I use the quotes only b/c phobias are not meant to be a shield/catch all for bigotry. To be clearer, it isn't a true phobia if you go by the DSM-V criterion which gives a pretty good outline of phobias (all kinds).
I digest... the point being that the AIDS issue and the gay issue are not one in the same, and was actually just going to say that I agree with the sentiment that they are separate issues... guess I just took the long way around.
