Excellent report, Byron. My take is the same as yours. Clinton was marvelous. A note about the Carter speech, which you had trouble hearing: it was, without question, the strongest attack on the Bush Administration that I heard last night. I wish every American would listen to that speech and recognize the immense credibility of its messenger.

No offense, but I have to say I'm a bit disappointed with this report. I mean, I appreciate the commentary about the major speeches, but there's already plenty of that from the major media outlets.

The networks are only covering a fraction of the convention, so it seems like there should be plenty of things to write about that aren't being covered elsewhere.

If you're just going to attend a bunch of events and then summarize them at the end of the day (or the next morning), you're really providing even less than a traditional journalist.

I oinly heard the Clinton speech but it was great. Once again he has proven what a tremendous oratory ability he has as well as the abillity to move people.

I agree with your evaluation of Clinton's speech. Isn't it amazing how far he's come since the 1988 National Convention when the delegates appauded so that he'd end his nomination speech for Michael Dukakis? I've heard portions of the speech before on C-SPAN when he addressed a University of Arkansas at Little Rock class on the presidency. He does such a great job of contrasting the political parties in the United States and their values.

I watched the speeches on PBS last night, and I agree with your assessment overall.

I did think Gore held back a bit, especially on Iraq, considering what he's said about the subject elsewhere. Perhaps he was trying to avoid getting to the left of Kerry/Edwards on the subject, but let's face it: most of the Democratic party thinks the Iraq war was a mistake, even if Kerry/Edwards don't (yet).

Carter came through much clearer on TV than you apparently heard, and I thought his speech was great. It did sound a bit slurred, though. I hope that isn't an early symptom of Parkinson's.

As for Hillary '08, God, I hope not. First, it would mean Kerry lost and we had to endure another Bush term. After eight years of Shrub, we're going to need someone to reverse the damage, not merely put it on hold for a while, and that sounds more like a job for Howard Dean (maybe not Dean himself, but someone like him) than Hillary Clinton.
