What I find interesting is that Butler still picked up 36% of the GOP vote. It's not like the Carrillo person did a horrible job in office or had any major scandal. He just had a Hispanic last name. Draw your own conclusions.
Posted by Karl-T at April 13, 2004 09:34 PMIt reminds me of how in my heavily Reublican county, when there was the Constitutional Amendment a few years back relating to funding for the border towns, there was an oddly high NO vote even when the rest of the ballot items were mostly the same (vote wise) just because the word "colonia" was used.
Posted by Karl-T at April 13, 2004 09:36 PMYou act like no one voted for Butler except due to racism. But Butler got plenty of press, maybe more than Carrillo in this race. Many people vote on name recognition alone. Throw in contrarians who liked the idea of the weird old guy winning, and crossover dems making mischief, and it's not a big surprise.
Still probably a bit due to racism, some unconscious, some not, maybe a third of the 35% Butler got.
But if the tables were turned, if this was a dem primary with Butler as the incumbent and Carrillo as the weird old guy, I wonder what percentage of the vote Carrillo would have gotten in south Texas? I'd guess 60-70% at least.
