I used the Contact link to send them the following message:
"Any company that is stupid enough to sell a Voting is for Old Pepole tee shirt ought to go to hell."
OK, I'm channeling Harry Truman again.
They also have toll-free lines:
Sales 800-282-2200
Customer Service 800-959-8794
Perhaps they need a wake-up call. Or two. In my experience, people in Texas have unique and individual ways to get their point across and tis might be an opportunity.
Posted by Brenda Helverson at February 25, 2004 05:37 PMUrban Outfitters is owned and run by a rich, right wing, proud funder of such asswipes as Rick Santorum. If you shop they're you're just fueling your own demise. Besides, what better idea to sell to young people than to stay home from the polls? That's the kind of democracy the GOP peddles these days. Don't call them on the phone - they won't care. Throw away the crap you bought there, don't shop there anymore, and tell your friends.
Posted by what do you expect? at February 25, 2004 05:47 PMnot to *jump* to their defense, but I think it was meant to be ironic... absent any other irony, the comment on their website about "just a tinge of irony" at least supports that to some extent. I think somebody's marketing ppl may at least theoretically have their heart in the right place: I mean, it's in the same line of shirts as one with a logo for Old English Malt Liquor :)
Posted by Jeff at February 25, 2004 05:55 PMSuburban Outfitters? Are those jerkwipes still on the Drag, selling shite to the trustafarians?
Posted by norbizness at February 25, 2004 06:31 PMYee-haw, hipsters!
I'm too cool for my soy-mocha-carmel-no foam-latte!
I'm too cool to care about my country!
Don't ignore me! I'm a person, too! Don't ignore me!
Not only do I say ignore you, but screw you and your minimum wage future as well.
Posted by Patrick at February 25, 2004 06:31 PMYeah, they're still on the drag....
Posted by Byron L at February 25, 2004 09:16 PMI've heard Urban Outfitters called, "a purveyor of overpriced, counterfeited ghetto warez to the mindlessly suburban affluent ".
Frankly, this smacks of a publicity stunt. UO probably believes in the old saying, "There is no such thing as bad publicity."
They knew there would be an uproar over this and decided that there was much more to be gained than lost by the attention.
They don't care about your indignation or civic mindedness. Complaining directly to them will only let them know that they are succeeding.
Threats of boycotts will just draw yet more attention to them, and that's exactly what they want.
The only way you can beat them at their game is to frame this scheme as a cynical attempt by a right wing company to intentionally depress the vote among the young.
As we know from Florida 2000 and the most recent election for US Senate from Louisiana, depressing voter turnout is a favorite tactic for Republicans.
Has anyone contacted MTVs rock the vote? I am sure they would have a field day ridiculing this. So what if it adds publicity to OA, as long as it is sent with a strong message that young people need to vote? If OA getting some free aire time is the price for MTV blasting them and getting young people involved in the political process, it is a trade off I am willing to make.
Posted by WhoMe? at February 25, 2004 11:57 PMIn Seattle, Urban Outfitters sold a Ghetto-opoly game last year that drew scores of protest. TO make matters worse, they promised to remove the game and then didn't. THe NAACP picketed the store before the game was removed. Really classy guys.
Posted by Brenda Helverson at February 26, 2004 12:52 AMAnother UO shirt: "Jesus is my Homie"
Oh My God! That shirt says Jesus is my homeboy! You're not even from the same hood as Jesus! You're from the Hamptons! Jesus was born in a barn!
Those stupid rich suburban kids . . . damn them and their silly ways.
Urban Outfitters makes *joke* shirts. (see poster - Jeff). You guys are being silly.
Posted by Suburban Trust Fund Kid at February 26, 2004 03:06 AMJeez, I thought the trucker hat thing was passé months ago. Come on, UA...
Posted by Skip Perry at February 26, 2004 05:49 AMThe same people who say that "Voting is for old people" must be the same people who believe that "Dying in a phoney-baloney war is for young people."
Posted by Victoria in Texas at February 26, 2004 09:37 AMI hope the kid wearing the "Voting is for Old People" shirt is the first one drafted when Junior is elected.
Posted by SPACEDARK` at February 26, 2004 03:32 PMWhy didn't Urban Outfitters start the controversy by offering this "Voting is for Young People" shirt at www.votingis.com?
yeah, this group is also profitting off the controversy, but their message is much better.

I am a 75 year old great grandmother and I have been looking everywhere and can't find the "Old Folks Vote" tee shirt. If you can tell me where to find them I will buy a dozen in every different color.
FINALLY someone has had enough courage to make a shirt saying what every parent has known for generations.
Young people don't want to get up an hour early to get to the polls before school or work. Young people are "too tired and too hungry" to stop by the polls on the way home after work. Young people have a memory that can't remember where their polling place is or whether or not they actually registered when they got their drivers license - and, if they did, where were they living and what party did they register with. Young people watch MTV and go to the movies rather than read the newspapers or listen to news channels. Young people hate politics and love pizza and cokes. Young people wither up and blow away when you suggest they go out in a little rain or snow to vote; they only do that when they are sking or skateboarding or walking to see a movie or a girl (boy) friend.
Only old people vote????YOU BETCHA KID. We are the only ones who care enough about what is happening to our families, our friends, our environment and our country to dedicate the time to getting informed and going out the door with a voting purpose only. By the way, can you tell me which offices in your state will be up for election in 2006?
One more thing - don't ever blame anyone but yourselves for the mess we are in. You could have outvoted us 2 to 1 if you really cared!!!!!!!!!!!!
Where can I get those shirts on the net????????
Posted by Joan at March 3, 2004 04:39 PMIs this a private fight or can anyone get in? Rather than play the game of competing messages about just whom voting is for in this country, I made a site (with shirts for sale, of course--how better to make countervailing statements against stupid t-shirts). You can enter your own adjective then get a shirt with your customized message. http://www.votingisforpeople.com/
Posted by Chris Hiester at March 13, 2004 08:18 AMThis is nothing compared to the new "Dress Up Jesus" toy they are selling. There were about 30 protesters with signs at the mall entrance today. This has to be the most tasteless and offensive thing I've ever seen for sale in any store in my life. Even if you aren't a Christian, you have to admit that this thing is just sick (basically mocks Jesus, you can put stupid magnetic clothing on him as he hangs on the cross, things like Dr. Seuss hats and even a devil costume).
What next? Magnetic swastikas? Pretty sure this company just does this stuff to piss a lot of people off and in the process get free advertising so they can sell more overpriced counterfeit "urban" wear to rich suburban white kids.
