April 25, 2005Texas Union not my FriendBy Karl-Thomas MusselmanI'm not happy with the Texas Union right now. University Democrats was there tonight working on making some T-shirts for our silent protest of HJR 6 (join us in the gallery Monday morning at 10 AM, look for the shirts that say "Hate is not a Texas Value" on them, and come wear one). Some manager person came over and asked us to please removed our pizza boxes, because we had ordered some from Austin's Pizza for the volunteers. Why did we have to remove them? Because the Union apparently has some contract with Mustachio Pete's (also not a Union vendor) and can only allow their pizza to be eaten in their common dining area. We could eat it, the man said, if we ripped the tops of the boxes off with the competitor's labels on them. It was about the most ridiculous reason I can possibly think of to kick us out of the Union. Mr. Union Board Representative James Burnham has a blog, so if this is an issue or policy that he might have any control over, I'll be sure to let him know about this entry. So leave your comments. I hope it isn't against the rules to drink Starbucks or eat dorm food, or anything else that I might be eating while working on homework, socializing with friends, or meeting non-UT people for any particular reason. So much for a Student Union. Posted by Karl-Thomas Musselman at April 25, 2005 01:44 AM | TrackBack

Hey, has GLBTAAA ever thought of buying shirts from http://www.finebyme.org? Posted by: chrisken at April 25, 2005 02:16 AMNo, but now we have. Thanks for the tip, I've seen the shirts around before but didn't know what from. Posted by: Karl-T at April 25, 2005 02:26 AMKT - It even gets worse. Had you wanted to get Austin's Pizza into the Union, you would have had to fill out a food memo. This memo would have to go all the way to Dr. Vick and then be approved by his office. You would have had to submit this food memo a good 2 weeks before the UDEMS meeting in the Union. Chances are you would have been denied due to the contract with M's Pizza. So much for your freedoms to eat whatever you want. Grube Posted by: Grube at April 25, 2005 09:18 AMYo, There's a good reason for this and Grube knows it. As per the pizza, if you're having an event in the Union you have to write down if you're going to have food when you make the reservation. It is all on that form you signed to get the room so you shouldn't act all surprised. If you had read the form you would have noticed this. The union doesn't have to allow outside food (they have their own pizza place) but they do and they go only through Mustache Pete's because they've got a good deal with them and that benefits the students. Part of that deal is no pizza from anyone else. They didn't ask you to remove it they just asked you to take of the logo. If you had not been a student group but rather a student taking in a box of Dominos and had thus not entered inot the Union contract no one would have cared. As for food memos that is a Union thing and not a university thing as I understand it. WE, the SEC, have to fill out food memos that, if over $500, go to Dr. Vick. This is because we're part of a university Dept. that uses student fees. If we didn't have the food memo we could theoretically spend all of our money on pizza and ice-cream for ourselves without getting it approved. It would be awesome for us but detrimental because student funds would have been wasted. Grube knows this and he also knows I read this and he's probably giving me a hard time. Posted by: matth at April 25, 2005 10:20 AMYou just had to get technical on me didnt you? I think you would argue with a brick wall, but then again, as would I. Grube Posted by: Grube at April 25, 2005 10:30 AMFYI - As I told Karl, some listener called into Rush Limbaugh about the Kerry event. I only know this because my Grandmother is an avid fan (she voted for Kennedy and LBJ but wont admit it to this day). Apparently Rush was saying it was most likely a low turn out and he only talked about the election as such. The listener had to correct Rush on several comments about the event and gave props to it being successful. Maybe there is hope? Grube Posted by: Grube at April 25, 2005 10:34 AMMore brick wall pontificating: it isn't against the rules to do any of those things listed at the bottom. As well, upon rereading this I think maybe you hadn't made a room reservation but were instead hosting an improptu event in the Union? If you don't have a reservation and someone isn't using that area that's totally cool. The union doesn't lock the doors or anything. Then you may have not seen the Pizza thing. It may seem stupid sometimes but they didn't ask you to leave, they just asked you to take the tops off the boxes. There has to be some control over what goes in and what goes out and just be grateful that you don't have to only use Bene pizza. Posted by: matth at April 25, 2005 10:52 AMWhatever happened to student unions being student-friendly and not business whores? Oh, I forgot, it's UT we're talking about--never mind. I'm sorry, but UDems pay union fees every semester, just like everyone else, and ought to be allowed to bring outside food in. Posted by: Andrea Meyer at April 25, 2005 01:12 PMThe UB's rebutal at www.westcampusinsider.blogspot.com Posted by: JamesBurnham at April 25, 2005 01:23 PMThe Union has to make enough money to provide services, student events, et cetera. One of the ways of doing that is by offering their own food services. You pay fees but, as a $/sq. foot ratio you pay a lot less than other schools. If you're for raising tuition/fees I'd be all for it. Posted by: matth at April 25, 2005 01:27 PMKT - Can you clarify? Was it a Udems thing? like that shirt making party... or just people studying? That makes a difference. If someone wants to get einstein's bagel or chipotle and want to bring it in I promise you know one cares. Posted by: matth at April 25, 2005 03:12 PMno one cares either... Posted by: matth at April 25, 2005 03:15 PMIt was an impromptu event. We didn't fill out some silly room request form because there was more than enough empty space with nothing going on in the 40 acres room. They originally threatened us with having to leave with the pizza and only after we gave the guy 'the look' did he cave in and allow us to stay so long as we tore of the box tops. This university needs less rules, regulations, and advance request forms for everyday actions. The last time I check this University was still here to serve the students of Texas, not lawyers. It's also one of the reasons that if there are ways around rules or places to skirt them where it doesn't but a burdun on the entity or others possibly sharing a space, I don't worry about it. I'm so tired of places on campus acting like corporate whores and if I could avoid the Union for projects I would. Posted by: Karl-T at April 25, 2005 04:37 PMThe reason why the Union has the event request forms is pretty simple: Imagine wanting to do an event, like John Kerry, and showing up and find the room full of YCT kids having a "Lets hate everyone who isn't us" party. The union has room requests so that people can have events when they want them and not have to worry about someone else taking the room. I understand room requests, but still, the pizza bit is just obnoxious. Posted by: Karl-T at April 25, 2005 04:46 PMget bagels. Posted by: matth at April 25, 2005 06:23 PMThe pizza issue is just another reason why union board candidates shouldn't be on sg tickets... bwahahaha! Posted by: chrisken at April 25, 2005 11:24 PM
