Rose vs. Falwell

By Byron LaMasters

State Rep. Patrick Rose (D-Dripping Springs) is running for reelection against right-wing Republican Alan Askew. Askew has some interesting friends including the Reverend Jerry Falwell (of "blame the gays, feminists, ACLUers, PFAWers and abortion doctors for 9/11" fame):

The only local politician Falwell mentioned by name was Wimberley Republican Alan Askew, who is trying to unseat state Rep. Patrick Rose, D-Dripping Springs. Falwell said he would vote for Askew if he lived in Askew's district, which covers all of Hays, Caldwell and Blanco counties.

Askew is a graduate of Falwell's Liberty University in Virginia, and his father, Neal Askew, sits on the school's board of trustees. Neal Askew had loaned or donated $271,000 to his son's campaign through Sept. 23.

In addition, Alan Askew's wife used to be Falwell's receptionist, and Rush is Neal Askew's son-in-law.

There's enough insane, crazy right-wingnuts in the Texas legislature, and we sure as hell don't need another one. Pay Patrick Rose a visit, check out his latest ads, and send him a few bucks if ya got the chance.

A friend and I attended Falwell's speech (mainly to see whether he would mention Bush or Kerry by name). It was pretty much what we expected, but someone ought to be challenging Falwell on violating IRS tax law. It is illegal for Bannockburn Baptist Church to allow political endorsements from its pulpit while maintaining tax-exempt status. He covered himself by not mentioning Bush and Kerry by name, although he kept saying things like, "You'd have to be stupid to not know what I'm saying" when referencing Kerry's positions. But when it came to Askew, Falwell didn't just mention his relationship with the Askew family; he asked the crowd to pray for the candidate and commented on Askew's character and view of public service. It sure seemed to us like Falwell went beyond just violating the spirit of the law.

Adieu Askew

Alan Askew’s Dad paid his due

All through college at Liberty U

Jerry Falwell and Dad

Bought his TV ads

Like Rick Green, with a Swaggert-toned hue.

Well his cowboy hat looked so gay

But right-wing ties gave him away.

Tell Falwell to go

Where the sun never shows

And vote Rose on election day.
