Free State Project Worthless

By Andrew Dobbs

If you haven't heard of the Free State Project it is this loveably hairbrained scheme to move a whole bunch of Libertarians to New Hampshire and take over the political process there. Their theory is that it will give them an opportunity to prove to the rest of us that a party run primarily by conspiracy theorists, militia movementers and slot machine addicts can in fact run a state well. Anyway, looks like they might have a bit of a hiccup.

Michael Badnarik's campaign failed to make the ballot in "Live Free or Die" New Hampshire. How hard can it be for the Libertarians to make the ballot in New Hampshire when they managed to gather more 77,389 signatures in California, 128,120 signatures in Louisiana and 112,557 in Minnesota? The Libertarians have made it onto 49 ballots, missing out on only New Hampshire and Oklahoma.

So Badnarik's dreams of a laissez faire utopia in the Granite State seem to be a little bit off track, but the question now becomes why should Nader (who most observers will be on something to the effect of 35 ballots) get included in poll questions but not Badnarik who will be on virtually every state ballot? If we are smart we might just be able to pump up the Libs' numbers and cost Bush some close states. If only they'd nominated Russo...

As a Badnarik supporter, I was one of the most surprised that he didn't make the ballot in New Hampshire. It would appear, however, that the story is not so simple as the New Hampshire Libertarians falling down on the job.

According to a recent article by Sean Haugh, there's something rotten in the Granite State:

New Hampshire was supposed to take care of itself. Considering the moderate signature requirement (by comparison, if that formula was used in North Carolina we’d need 19,500 signatures for our ballot access) and also considering that LPNH is one of the brightest stars among LP state parties, the news we were in trouble there came as a great shock.

Among the many reports of irregularities in the signature gathering and verification process, mostly unconfirmed, there appears one solid opening of appeal. Towns in New Hampshire are required by law to return signatures to the party by September 1st, so that the party can deliver them to the Secretary of State’s office by September 8th. Yet many towns sent the petitions back late. Some bear postmarks of September 8, 9, or 10. In Rochester, apparently the LPNH signatures were picked up by person or persons unknown and are now missing.

LPNH has filed a complaint with the New Hampshire Ballot Law Commission, which is scheduled to meet on September 24th. Ralph Nader is also appealing on similar grounds. Some ballot access experts are suggesting that LPNH take it to court earlier than that.

Will the lawsuit work? Will the Free State Project fail? Will Badnarik surge from behind and win the election?

I'm sure we all have our guesses, but none of the answers are in yet.

Yours truly,
Mr. X

...let Badnarik debate...

I think the best way for pro-freedom people to win isn't to take over a state, it's to take over a national party.

Actually, a friend from NH tells me that despite this electoral failure, the NH Free State Project has been more successful than you might think behind the scenes. Namely, that is, their GOP governor-- Craig Benson, a wealthy businessman-- has gladly embraced the Free Staters and started appointing them to an increasing number of economic-policy jobs and government-service areas he'd like to see gutted. So slowly they are making progress, and will continue to unless Benson should lose his re-election this fall to Democrat John Lynch.

"the question now becomes why should Nader (who most observers will be on something to the effect of 35 ballots) get included in poll questions but not Badnarik who will be on virtually every state ballot?"

this is what I've been saying for a while now...
instead of bitching about Nader we should have spent our time playing up and helping the libs and the constitution party...
getting them on more ballots, polls, and debates would strengthen democracy (just like having Nader there would! :P) and it would mean Bush would be getting hammered from the right as well...
