August 25, 2004Conservative Student Paper to Begin in AustinBy Byron LaMastersBecause ya know, the Austin Review and Contumacy just aren't enough for the other side. They need a conservative daily to counter the liberal Daily Texan. Whether the Daily Texan is liberal depends almost entirely on that year's editor. I'm causiously optimistic about this year, but the past couple of year's the Texas has had libertarian or conservative-leaning editors. Calling the Texan liberal when they had assinine editorials supporting third-party candidates against Elliott Naishtat and Lloyd Doggett - both of whom have been champions for UT. They also endorsed State Sen. Gonzalo Barrientos's Republican opponent that year, when Barrientos has been the leader in the state senate for a student regent. Anyway, here's what the Austin Chronicle has about the new paper:
I'll be sure to check it out with a critical eye when it appears on the scene. Posted by Byron LaMasters at August 25, 2004 09:14 AM | TrackBack

Great. At least other papers pretend to be objective. The Austin Student promises to be one-sided, judgmental and biased from the get-go, huh? Sounds like pure neo-con propaganda to me. What is going on - did these people get lost on their way to College Station? Posted by: Sandra P. at August 25, 2004 09:45 AMSo are they assuming that everyone will stop reading the Texan and switch over? They would have to think that to have a distribution of 35,000. I hope they took the time to look up the number of a good recycling plant. I hope none of my student fees end up supporting this crap. Posted by: ebures at August 25, 2004 09:49 AMI'd like to see the U Dems or some other progressive student group really kick it into overdrive this year. As an alumnus, I'd be pleased to pitch a little cash in their direction - it's getting a little embarassing that our little liberal oasis is being slowly chipped away. According to their emails, the YCT has a lot of events planned for this fall already: *Hold a Conservative Coming Out Day this fall to encourage UT students to express their support for conservative positions. (Wednesday, September 1 on the west mall) *Hold Chain-link pro-life rally (September 21 on the east mall) *In October, we will be releasing the first ever Robert Jensen I Hate America Scholarship to recognize the UT student or professor who has demonstrated the most grotesque display of hatred for the United States during the past year. We will feature them on our website and provide a one-way plane ticket to North Korea. * Sponsor an "SUV only" car wash. * Thanksgiving competition with the University Democrats and Campus Greens to donate the canned goods for charity. * Ask Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott to oppose racial preferences in university admissions based on the Texas Constitution. * Bring conservative author Dinesh D'Souza to UT. * Push for a statue of Ronald Reagan on campus. And now there's a new conservative paper to boot. What are progressive students planning and how can we support their efforts? Posted by: Anonymous at August 25, 2004 11:59 AMIt'll be a cold day in hell before they have a Ronald Reagan statue on MY college campus. Though I disagree with their ideology you can't fault them for creativity. I love the Robert Jensen scholarship idea... funny stuff. Oh, and we're going to kick some ass in the canned food drive. Posted by: Andrew D at August 25, 2004 12:48 PM"Contumacy"?!? That's gotta be the most pretentious name for a publication I've ever heard. Is it as bad as the name makes it sound? Posted by: Charles Kuffner at August 25, 2004 09:16 PMCharles - check it out, here. It's crazy. Posted by: Byron L at August 26, 2004 01:02 AM
