July 27, 2004National AnthemBy Byron LaMastersThat was different. Never heard of the language, but it sounds enchanting however it's sung. Thanks to Michael Enis and Alicia Childs of the Tohono O'odham Nation in Arizona for singing tonight's national anthem via satelite.

It is a beautiful language but I couldn't help but feel a little awkward and embarassed to have Native Americans singing the national anthem in their own language given history. When we abolished the horror of slavery, we did everything we could to make those former slaves and their relatives for generations to come, part of society but the Native American population in our country is almost like Gaza to Israel....dare I say it. Maybe that's a little extreme but that's the uncomfortable thought that crossed my mind as I heard them sing. Posted by: B.K. The tune from English drinking song, To Anacreon in Heaven, is really really bad, even if you are one of the 4 human beings on earth who can sing it. Despite what some people may think i believe they have done a good job and it should be clear that when ever such a valuable song is sung we should respect it in every way......to those who critisized their culture you dont know anything about history. Native Americans have given alot of land and helped many people in the past learn how to survive......I would like to recognize them for preserverance and being so unique. I cant imagine you have sung to anyone not in a pretty manner anyway.... do you have a languauge to sing the National Anthem ? How would you feel to be thrown at such horrible thoughts embarrasing your culture? Do you even have a culture? You may be into politics but that only deals with dem and repub. it has nothing to do with the past along with racism. You got another thing coming. By the way you talk you embarrarased yourself. Yes, there was some criticism, but thanks to people like you all and for our family's support, we have been able to get through the negative feedback. Just to let you know, I knew the song in English before I leared it in my Native tounge. I love the song and the meaning behind it.
