Digital Cameras are Really Cool

By Byron LaMasters

My parents gave me a digital camera yesterday as one of my birthday presents. I'm really excited about it, because tomorrow I'm heading to Vancouver with them for a family vacation, and then of course the week after next I'll be headed to Boston for the convention. Anyway, I decided to test out the camera tonight at our Dallas County Young Democrats meeting. There were a few kinks, and I still have to figure out how to use all the features on the camera, but I'm excited to have it. I'm certainly looking forward to the opportunity to get as many pictures as I can of politicians and celebrities at the convention. Anyway, tell me what you think so far....

DCYD Treasurer David Hardt, State Rep. candidate Katy Hubener and yours truly (DCYD Executive Director).

My friends David (at his house before the meeting), Ali and Andy (all from the UT Democrats). Notice their shirts. David's is the hero (accompanied by a picture of John Kerry in uniform) / zero (with Dubya) shirt. Ali is wearing her Good Bush / Bad Bush t-shirt, and Andy is wearing his "I support the Homosexual Agenda" shirt.

Them again.

Good to see my Dallasite friends in action. How's Kerry's chances at winning Dallas County?

What kind of digital camera do you have, Byron?

I think you may have it set to take too low res a photo (unless you modified the photo in an editor before posting). I've found that, with most digitals, using the medium or next highest res setting from the lowest one will usually eleminate some of the pixilation evident in the photo posted.

When I was in the newspaper business, I "digitized" our operation and we had to overcome these problems. To add to the problems, we were given seven of the cheapest, crappiest digital cameras on the market to use by our owner and only one good one. Though newspaper publishing is different than web publishing, that lowest setting usually won't work unless you have something like a Cannon D-60, and even then it's risky.

I'd also caution against using a card that's been erased too many times. Although a lot of the digital camera afficianados out there would disagree, I've found that the longer the memory cards are used the poorer quality the pictures get. Of course, we'd shoot several hundred pictures a week which is a pretty high volume.
