June 30, 2004Please, Pick EdwardsBy Karl-Thomas MusselmanAt the State Convention, I heard Edwards speak for the very first time. As well as Kucinich. Edwards blew me away, Kucinich, was blowing steam. But back to Edwards. If Kerry picked him for the Veep, I would even give some money to the campaign (which right now I'm not since local candidates need it more than Kerry in my opinion at this point). Edwards has passion, and vision, and hope, and optimism and what a hell of a message. Granted, I am still a Deaniac at heart, but Edwards gives me some soul and I would have been for him if Dean wasn't in the race, and since Dean isn't in the race for VP, put me down as an Edwards guy. Gephardt, bless the man, leaves me cold (and Iowans too, aparently with his less than Dean finish). Don't count me in quite yet. I love Edwards and he'd make a fine VP but I am afraid of promoting this Edwards for VP zeitgeist that threatens the legitimacy of any other candidate for VP. Great as he is, he is imperfect and I'm not sure how good it would be in the long run. I'd like to see Vilsack, Richardson, Sebelius, Landrieu and a lot of others considered as well. And do you seriously think anyone else is under consideration at this point except Gep and Ed? Do you really believe that there have been no leaks about anyone else? This is Kerry we are talking about. Him pull a big surprise? Who knows, stranger things could happen. Like Kucinich beating him in the delegate race. I'd be happy with most of the potential VP candidates, even if Gephardt would disappoint me a little bit. Personally, I think Gephardt would be the smart choice- probably giving Kerry Missouri, as well as a lot of help in Ohio, Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania. But the very idea of an Edwards-Cheney debate makes me salivate. Posted by: Jeff at June 30, 2004 08:30 AMI like Edwards, Vilsack, and Richardson. But I have this feeling that Kerry will pick Gephardt. Picking him won't give you Missouri that easily. Gep is from metro St. Louis which is not the part of the state that you want to be from, trying to run statewide. I do think Gephardt helps Kerry in Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and possibly West Virginia. Posted by: pc at June 30, 2004 04:59 PMThe public is very fickle so it is hard to tell if John Edwards was a good choice by John Kerry for running mate. Only time will tell. However, I think that in the year 2000 Edwards would have been considered too liberal and would probably have been no more help to Al Gore than Joe Liebermann. In my opinion, Richard Gephardt would have been the Democrats' best choice for president the last time and again, this time.
