June 27, 2004Old Friends and Crazy ShitBy Byron LaMastersI got up today in my typical Sunday morning routine. I Slept in. Made a pot of cofee, then spent a few relaxing hours reading the Dallas Morning News and the New York Times. So who's on the front page of the Dallas Morning News? My old friend from elementary school, Doug Havard. I was friends with Doug from 4th grade through 6th grade when we both attended the Parish Day School. We parted our seperate ways after sixth grade. I kept in touch with him until eighth or ninth grade, but at that point we more or less lost contact. Doug was always a wheeler-dealer. In elementary school he'd buy a box of baseball cards and sell the packs to myself and my friends for a profit. Unfortunately, he turned to selling drugs and fake i.d's in high school and college. When he was arrested for selling GHB to an undercover cop, he fled the country. A part of me was hoping he'd just fade away - have a nice life with the hundreds of thousands of dollars that he had made on some remote beach. But Doug got greedy. He got himself involved in an international money laundering scheme and was arrested this month in England. I don't have any sympathy for the guy. He'll be in prison for a long time, and that's a good thing. Anyway, read today's Dallas Morning News for more. For further background, read this 2002 Dallas Observer story. This guy deserves to have the book thrown at him. This guy was not "forced" into this criminal lifestyle. He did not have to steal to feed a family or purchase some other necessity. (not that those are justifications for committing a crime, but they are releavnt to the issue of sentencing and "how bad a person he really is"). Instead, this person consciously chose evil. He deserves whatever he gets. Posted by: WhoMe? at June 27, 2004 07:02 PMFurthermore, Byron isn't my only friend to have some contact to him. Another friend of mine has a very good friend who lived in the dorms at SMU with Havard and she alleges that he raped her after subduing her with GHB. He is scum and he can rot in hell. Posted by: Andrew D at June 28, 2004 12:37 AMI saw the Havard story today, and all I could think was, "Didn't the Observer have this months ago?" Posted by: Tracy at June 28, 2004 01:01 AMhey well i knew doug, even when he lived in dallas i still remember his apartment and i am friends with his sister. I feel sorry for doug...he could have been really successful in the real world...but i hope that this is a wake up call for others who do things similar to what doug did because we are not living in the movie"catch me if you can" be careful and doug...hang in there man. Posted by: chloe at July 20, 2004 11:55 AMdid anyone ever meet his girlfriend Stephanie he was dating for years..i think she worked for his Dad according to a good friend of mine from SMU. I heard his roomate Sal said he protected her from everything, she was the one who bailed him out of jail. I heard he only let his friend Payne & Softee near her....anyone??? Heard she's super hot now Posted by: TC at September 7, 2004 12:21 AMhe's not a bad person, he just does stupid things. byron, i know you dont remember me, but i'm doug's sister. the less you and anyone you know say, the better for me and my family. i'd appreciate it, ya know? Doug and his family are lying theives. He and his family deserve whatever they have coming to them. His family knew what was going on and his sister should be listed as an accomplice to a fugitive. I don't know how you(his sister) says he is not a bad person. Tying somebody up and pointing a gun at them isn't bad? Taking a Jr. in highschool to a shooting range during the student council car wash isn't what i call good. I can't wait till he gets sentanced for life. People Make Mistakes, The person that has not made a mistake should be the person to throw the first stone-- Personally i had have made my mistakes, some of them where when Doug and I where friends or some would say "associates". I have since turned away from my old ways, and I am sure Doug would have grown out of his. the only hang up is when a youthful mistake of gaining profit from the forbiden and exciting ways earns you thousands if not hundreds of thousands then it make it that much harder to turn away. I have served a small sentence for the one of the mistakes ive made and made me open my eyes to the consequences if i was to get in trouble for the more serious things i was involved in. Doug never had the good fourtune to spend a year in prison to give him a chance to open his eyes, and that is sad that his first jail stay that is over a day is going to be (probably) until his death. To Dougs family: He is truly sorry for putting you through this. I was once the "idiot son" the "bad person" the "wanna be gangsta" and no one saw me as being one to be sorry and i was crushed when i had to tell my mom that i was going to be away for a long time and there was noone to blame but myself. Happy Birthday Doug Posted by: Stephanie at September 18, 2004 05:53 AMok so I have read a lot of people's comments about Doug Havard and I think that it is really unfair what people are saying about him and especially his family. People are talking a lot about this whole situation and while a lot of what is written is factual, there are also a lot that is not. It is hard to know what is true and what isn't unless you had previously known him. I didn't know Doug very well at all but I used to see him around a lot and I only spoke with him a few times over the phone, and met up with him a few times. One of my best friends knew him really well, though. The things that I have been told about Doug all came from people who were very good friends with him. In no way is this his family's fault. It is already hard enough for them at this time and they don't need people trying to pin this on them. Posted by: someone from Starbucks at October 21, 2004 01:57 PMDoug Havard rocks!
