June 19, 2004No Speaking Roll for Sylvester TurnerBy Byron LaMastersI don't know why Sylvester Turner was so upset that he didn't have a speaking role at the convention. There's a reason we didn't here from John Whitmire - he would have been heckled out of the room. It's likely that Sylvester Turner would have had a similar response (considering that he's in the Craddick leadership team and that he did not join the Killer D's in Ardmore, OK). Regardless, Turner complained to the Houston Chronicle:
Who does Sylvester Turner think that he is? If his idea of being effective is working with Tom Craddick to cut thousands of children off the CHIP program and raising tuition rates for universities across the state as a result of tuition deregulation, then yes, Sylvester Turner is effective. My idea of an effective legislator is one who does everything in their power to stop, block and obstruct the Draconian budget cuts and right-wing power grabs that the Texas GOP has engaged themselves in. I think that the applause that people like Garnett Colman (D-Houston) and Jim Dunnam (D-Waco) received by the convention crowd suggests that most of the delegates to the convetion would agree with me. Byron, you are correct in praising Coleman and Dunnam for their efforts to derail the Republican freigh train. When, however, you said, "My idea of an effective legislator is one who does everything in their power to stop, block and obstruct the Draconian budget cuts and right-wing power grabs that the Texas GOP has engaged themselves in," my thoughts turned to Rep. Pete Gallego(D-Alpine). Watching him fight the appropriations bill or the travesty that was HB 2292 was as bittersweet as it was delightful. Deadpan, soft-spoken, asking simple-sounding questions to deadly effect. He didn't derail the train, but I definitely think Gallego was one of those who put his body on the rails. Posted by: cp at June 21, 2004 12:02 PMI shared a strange moment outside the convention center Saturday afternoon with Rep. Terri Hodge (District 100). She asked me if Sylvester had spoken yet, and I replied that as far as I knew, he hadn't (she had watched me walk over from the center.) She remarked that she REALLY hoped he would (speak). Strange. Unsure of the allegiance there. She HAD to know of the controversy surrounding whether or not he was speaking.... Posted by: Deanocrat at June 21, 2004 12:32 PMGarnet Coleman tried to ram things down the troats of "ordinary delegates," as he co-chaired the platform committee at the convention. Then he pretended like some of the ideas he opposed were his. Don't trust that guy. He's pro death penalty. He is for non-transparent government. Yet he has people thinking he is a progressive. But I guess he's still better than the republicans. mh. As far as the turner guy, at least it is clear what he is. You know, I really hope some of you progresives will run for office. Pickins are slim. I've been very disappointed in some of the reps. Posted by: Dallasidian at July 2, 2004 01:53 AM
