May 09, 2004Supporting College DemocratsBy Byron LaMastersIt's always a privilege to see talented young Democrats run for office. One such candidate is Ashley Bell, the current President of the College Democrats of America. Bell is running for state representative in Georgia and is the Democratic nominee against a Democrat-turned-Republican incumbent in a district Democrats had held for fifty years. Anyway, you can help him out by sending him a few bucks if you so desire. His webpage is here. Learn more about Ashley on his bio page. Impressive work. While I'm on the topic of College Democrats, don't forget that we have a College Democrat here in Texas running for the state house - James Gilbreath. So James is pro-life. Well, it's interesting to see that there are "Democrats for Life" running for office... Posted by: Karl-T at May 9, 2004 07:30 PMYeah, I noticed that, too. I was disappointed to see that, but he seems like a decent candidate overall. Posted by: Byron L at May 9, 2004 07:32 PMPersonally pro-life doesn't mean anti-choice. Posted by: Seth at May 9, 2004 09:19 PMI'm just glad to see that young people are running (and, for what it is worth, winning). Politics is open to those who have energy and ideas, but who are willing to play the game. Shameless plug: go to Amazon.com or bn.com and buy my book BORN TO RUN: ORIGINS OF THE POLITICAL CAREER, which is about young Democrats amd Republicans trying to make it in state legislatures. Or, check out of the library. But run for office, and run on what you believe. Posted by: Keith G at May 10, 2004 08:03 AMLet me clarify my stance on abortion. The sad thing about politics is that many (Republicans) claim to be pro-life and then do nothing about it. After all, a state rep isn't a supreme court justice. But they'll take those pro-life votes regardless. Maybe you can all agree that abortion should be safe, rare, and legal, and that the larger problems of reproductive education, safe sex (not abstinence, which only works in conjunction with other techniques like free condoms), and child care do require the attention of society? For the Dems to become a majority party again requires that the party become more open-minded to people like Mr. Gilbreath. Good Luck James. I may be down to check in on you. Posted by: Keith G at May 10, 2004 10:01 AMI am as pro-choice as you can get (I attended the March for Womens' Lives), and I agree with the safe, rare, and legal strategy. Rare: Schools must provide adequate sex education. Contraceptives should be affordable, easy to access, and information regarding such must be amde available through school health offices. I know many think, how hard is it to buy a box of condoms? Well, harder for some than you think, especially in a small town when the druggist insists on lecturing you or knows your parents. (This happened to someone I know.)Plan B, or emergency contraception, should be made available over the counter. This will prevent many unintended pregnancies, and therefore will cut down on abortions. Legal: This is a personal, medical decision to be made ONLY by the woman involved. It is between her God, herself, and her family. To make a medical procedure illegal on the grounds of "morals" and what the Bible says in unconscienable and wrong. (Which is the argument that many "pro-lifers" with whom I am acquainted make.) Honestly, I think that Democrats for Life can be an asset to the mainstream Democratic party, but I have talked with some members who work for Republicans based on that one issue, ignoring the rest of the Democratic platform. We are a big-tent party, and the two organizations need to reach out to one another. Pro-choicers are indeed pro-life--we value the lives of women. Anyway, this is only MHO. :) Posted by: Andrea M. at May 10, 2004 10:38 AMHis website could use alot of work. And I don't just mean how it looks - some of the spelling is wrong. Democrat or not, I can't get excited about a candidate who can't spell. Posted by: hope at May 10, 2004 11:13 PMGilbreath's, I mean. Posted by: hope at May 10, 2004 11:14 PM
