April 14, 2004Big ANC Victory in South AfricaBy Byron LaMastersSouth Africa successfully held their third national election since the end of Apartheid, and the African National Congress won a big victory again. I don't follow South African politics much, but theres some good coverage here. Posted by Byron LaMasters at April 14, 2004 10:28 PM | TrackBack

In the 1980s the apartheid government, often with cheerleading from some in the Reagan administration, claimed that if blacks were granted voting equality, South Africa would have "one man, one vote, one time". The ANC is on track to get about 70% of the vote. Its closest rival, the Democratic Alliance, may pick up 15%. South Africa seems to be following the same path as neighboring Botswana. There seems to be a conscious effort to avoid the mistakes which have turned another neighbor, Zimbabwe, into a living hell. Since South Africa uses paper ballots, returns are still coming in.You can monitor them at the site of the Independent Electoral Commission. This practice of democracy is great. Stateside, how come Teresa Kerry is the only African-American on John Kerry's staff? Looks so much like Dean's staff. Normal practice i guess. Not very many people of color up in the northeast? Posted by: peter at April 15, 2004 02:27 PMso peter, when did u stop painting racial slurs on black people's homes? Posted by: anti-peter at April 15, 2004 08:40 PMHey anti, i've never used words i'm not comfortable with and i've never been comfortable with racial slurs. The black person's home across the street has never been tagged and the hispanic person's house two doors down hasn't either. Our children have spent the night at each others home. In my neighborhood we all get along, and i live in a lower middle class area with house values under 70K. i'm not part of that "special privleged" that Truman spoke about in his speech to the DNC when he accepted the nomination for president in 1948. How come the democratic message hasn't changed since 1948? Democrats said they were better in foreign policy then and the same now. Schools were crowded then, teachers underpaid and the same message now. Why didn't they fix all the problems Truman spoke of when they had super majorites in congress in 1965? 68 senators, 295 house members, control of all of the southern states. MLK was protesting against states that democrats ran. It took a northern democrat to see the light and force Wallace to admit blacks to universities. It took Nixon to end the practice of dual school systems in the south. "Remember the Titan's" was a result of that. It took Nixon to get afirmative action signed into law. Blacks always seem to be beholding to the Democratic party when the party does very little to further their causes. Well i'm ranting see ya anti.
