Since Republicans seem to be in a redistricting mood this year, let's give them some additional ideas.
Why not breakup the Railroad Commission into 3 districts, instead of electing them statewide. Louisiana has their Public Service Commission that way and Mississippi has their Tansportation Commission that way.
Why not revive late VP Jack Garner's idea and just breakup Texas into 5 states, then Craddick could get his oil district.

This is a little scary. In all honesty, the Courts of Appeals probably do need to be redistricted. There are several Courts of Appeals with so little case load that they get half of their case load "imported" from the Courts with heavier dockets. From a neutral court efficiency standpoint, something ought to be done.

The scary part is that I seriously doubt that the impetus to redistrict is for the right reasons, and suspect they are for the "right wing" reasons. Our Texas Supreme Court is already bought, sold and paid for by corporate interests(e.g Priscilla Owen) and I fear that Craddick is trying to ensure that the Courts of Appeals will be likewise.

Division of Texas
The congressional joint resolution for the annexation of Texas, passed on March 1, 1845, provided that new states, not to exceed four, could be carved out of Texas, the new states to be entitled to admission to the Union, with or without slavery if south of the Missouri Compromise line, and without slavery if north of that line.

In the 1930s John Nance Garner proposed a division that called for the maximum number of states permitted under the law, East Texas, West Texas, North Texas, South Texas, and Central Texas. Garner's arguments were familiar. Texas was too large, the sections of the state have contradictory interests, the West and South deserved increased representation in the Congress, candidates for office have too great a difficulty in carrying their program to all sections in an election campaign, and the people of the new states would be able to elect representatives more conversant with their needs. The Garner plan, like all others, came to naught.
