Dan Morales Pleads Guilty

By Byron LaMasters

This just in. Former Attorney General (1991-1999) and 2002 candidate for governor Dan Morales pled guilty today to mail fraud and income tax evasion. He faces fines and possible prison time. The Austin American Statesman reports:

Former Texas Attorney General Dan Morales, once among the brightest young stars in state politics, on Thursday pleaded guilty to federal charges of mail fraud and income tax evasion as part of a plea agreement that could send him to prison for four years. He also faces $1.25 million in fines.

The whole incident has just been sad to see. I was too young to have really followed Morales's political career, so when I first became familiar with him in the 2002 campaign, he just seemed weird - insisting on the whole "English only" in debates, and he made fool of himself in the Spanish debate against Tony Sanchez in the primary. I'm sure that had I been active in Texas politics back in the 1990s, I might have had some fonder memories of him, but its hard to have much sympathy who's such a sore loser (he endorsed both Perry and Dewhurst after losing the Democratic nomination last year). Dumb and Dumber. Well, it looks like Mr. Morales will have four years to think things over, so hopefully it will do him some good.

Well, my outstanding memory of Attorney General Morales is not a fond one. I was a freshman at UT when the Hopwood decision came down. Morales wrote the AG opinion that expanded the decision so that it basicly ended affirmative action in Texas. I remember being shocked that a Hispanic Democrat, a product of affirmative action, would do that. My sophomore year, the African American community in the dorms, which had been so apparent the year before, was practically non-existant, and UT had become a much whiter school. Morales was a disgrace to the Texas Democratic Party, an unworthy successor to AG Jim Mattox, and he is getting what he deserves!

In Morales' defense, his pattern of behavior suggests that his poor judgment is likely due to a serious psychological condition. What I have read about him indicates that he is a charismatic person who behaves erratically and seems incapable of reflecting on his behavior or learning from past mistakes. These are all characteristics of an antisocial personality disorder. I'm obviously not a psychologist, but my experiences with an ex-boyfriend who had this condition bear remarkable resemblance to some of Morales' alleged behavior.

I'll be sure not to date him.

This is interesting, because I am a Psychologist, and I experienced fraud directly from the Texas Attorney General's Office while Mr. Morales was in office. I was a doctoral student at UT Austin, and was contracted with to provide conflict resolution training by a program of the Texas Attorney General's Office called the Texas Mediation Initiative. The fraud I experienced was that I was offered one rate of reimbursement, only to find a much lower rate of pay noted in the contract I was issued. When I sought a correction in the contract, I received denials of ever having been given the offer to begin with, and intimidating statements were made to me. Luckily, I had the contract they did issue, and was able to retain a high powered attorney who intervened for me.

It was a very odd experience in my development, and I could not believe that the Office of the Attorney General would act in such an illegal and unethical fashion. At the time, I attributed all of this behavior to the Director of the Program, Susan Armoni, as well as to the Deputy Attorney General to whom she reported. However, with the information noted above, I wonder how high up the acceptance of this type of conduct went within the OAG under Mr. Morales.
