Dewhurst still might be pressured to drop the two-thirds rule, but at this point, he plans to use it. So what can Dems in the Senate do? Here's one idea:

It's becoming pretty clear that it's not just DeLay pushing this redistricting. Some very powerful and important GOP officials must want this done. I don't see Perry taking the risk this blows up in face for just DeLay. Why are they pushing for it? Because 6 Democrats won seats in Republican districts. Why? Because the GOP ran unelectable candidates in those districts, and people who voted for the GOP in other races (governor, for instance) voted for a Democrat rather than the GOP candidate. Why? Because it's becoming more and more common to see the extremists control the nominating process, and nominate a candidate that will do more than just talk about their agenda, but fufill it. And these extremists candidates don't win, because they don't get a single independent vote...and lose moderate Republicans in numbers. Since there is no real way to rein in the extremists without losing them (and thus losing lots and lots of elections), the GOP has opted for gerrymandering super-heavy Republican districts in the fond hope that even the most extreme candidate could be elected there.
