More Pressure for the Texas Republican Delegation to Support Children

by: Matt Glazer

Thu Oct 11, 2007 at 02:28 PM CDT

AFSCME,  together with a number of groups around the country, including U.S. Action and Americans United for Change,  formed the Emergency Campaign for America's Priorities- or ECAP.

ECAP's goal is to offer a full-throated articulation of why it is critically important to begin reinvesting in our country after years of neglect.

Case in point, why does Bush feel the need to veto a bill that would insure millions of children across the country?  Specifically, why does Bush, Cornyn, and every Republican member of the Texas Congressional delegation feel the need block 220,000 children from getting the insurance they need?

This week, ECAP and progressive groups all over the country are holding hundreds of events focusing on the need to override president bush's veto of the children's health insurance program (SCHIP).  AFSCME, SEIU and Americans United for Change have launched a major paid advertising campaign and will flood Capitol Hill with hundreds of thousands of calls, emails and letters demanding that members of Congress do the right thing and vote to overide bush's veto of SCHIP.  In Texas, that means going after Kay Granger.

The vote in the house next week is going to be close. In fact, we can specifically blame any of these Texas elected officials for being the one vote we needed to make the House veto proof.  That's right, 17 Republicans voted against Texas children.

Barton, Brady, Burgess, Carter, Conaway, Culberson, Gohmert, Granger, Hall, Hensarling, Sam Johnson, Marchant, McCaul, Neugebauer, Paul, Sessions, Smith, Thornberry

The watered down Republican alternative hurts too many families.  More importantly, it is not the bill millions of Americans support!

A recent poll commissioned by Americans United for Change, AFSCME and USAction on SCHIP pointed to some interesting observations. When people were told that Democrats want to spend more than Bush in order to cover more children, 63% agree with Democrats. But looking deeper, 3/5 independents agree; 1/3 Rs agree with Ds even when the statement is made in expressly partisan terms.  The numbers go further showing 70% of women and 57% of men agreed with the Democratic position on CHIP funding.

The ad above will begin running next week in Rep. Kay Granger's district and hundreds of local field events will complement the TV ads.  It is up to us to keep the pressure up and ensure they start representing us.  It is time for Barton, Brady, Burgess, Carter, Conaway, Culberson, Gohmert, Granger, Hall, Hensarling, S. Johnson, Marchant, McCaul, Neugebauer, Paul, Sessions, Smith and Thornberry to stop blindly doing what the President says, and vote for Texas children.

and the only response Republicans have is to attack a 12 year old boy and his brain damaged sister.

Classy.

I echo Harold's comments. I'm impressed (and in awe) about how much you've embraced this issue, and it's not just a political thing. I feel like you'd be arguing like this even if you were just a guy on the street. The fact that you are our editor here at BOR is an advantage to each and every visitor to this site.

I know your time commitments are strained (and I know many people don't realize that everything we do on this site is voluntary. I wanted to take a second to say I'm proud, and you challenge me to continue working, learning, and fighting for this issue.

Keep it up.

Now, a very great man once said that some people rob you with a fountain pen.

I have been moving to a new place so I haven't been able to get online in two days.  This is a nice way to come back to the internets.

I use to think that if people were given the political cover, they would naturally do the wrong thing.  After watching Bush, the Republican Delegation, and Cornyn all vote against children, I am inspired to do more and I am pissed.

Maybe that is how you became a CHIP expert too?

The way things have DEvolved into the mess its become I think its going to be awfully hard to find anyone and I mean anyone that we elect that is going to remain honest for very long...not with all the almost unlimited amount of dough the giant corporate sponsored lobby's have to throw at them every day.

I'd like to think that I couldn't be corrupted by money...but I'd only be fooling myself...I don't think anyone including office staff members could hold out forever when the bribe offers get bigger and bigger everytime one of the lobbiests that have unlimited access walks in the door.

There is one thing that is glaringly clear, there has to be a way found to at least limit access to our elected officials in conjunction to our elected officials being completely open even if that means they are under 24/7/365 scrutiny.  And I think that's about the only way to at least slow it down.

Its a bit more than ironic that the same people that say its OK to spy on anyone they wish, do not themselves believe that they should be scrutinized even more closely than others.  After all who is in better position to sell out...a citizen who has little or nothing to gain out of his corruption, or an elected official that has very much to gain out of selling out to corruption?

Shed your politcal party skins and think for yourself...you'll find it much more refreshing than sucking on the tailpipe of a political party propaganda machine.

We almost have to hope they don't override so we'll have the issue next year. That's callous, I know,  but until people see the callousness of the Republican Party, as this issue so well demonstrates, I continue to be afraid they won't get it.

RE: Republicans need to pick on someone their own size (5.00 / 1)
I can't believe that the Republicans would attack a 12 year old who just told a story about how the Children Health Insurance Program helped him and his family.  The Republicans need to pick on folks their own size, not a 12 year old that towers over them in class and stature.

"Be kind to dogs - and vote Democratic!" -Senator Tom Eagleton

Or we can beat them with their vote! (0.00 / 0)
I would love it if any one of them would change their vote, but if they don't then we need to do what we can to educate people and work to get these legislators sacked.  We have good people running against Cornyn and McCaul whom we need to help get elected.
