Report from John Edwards Austin Rally

by: Burnt Orange Report

Tue Jun 12, 2007 at 01:49 PM CDT

Sen. John Edwards appeared at Scholz Beer Garden in Austin, Texas today to meet, greet, and speak to over 1,000 local supporters. Provided below is a brief wrap-up based on reports from several of our writers and other friends who were in attendance.

We were told that over 1,000 people signed-up to be in attendance, and more paid for their entrance at the door. Whatever the number, Scholz' was at full capacity, that's for sure.

State Senator Kirk Watson (D-Austin) spoke to start the event. A former mayor of Austin, Senator Watson's endorsement of Edwards today came along with the endorsement from other Texas Democrat leaders -- Rep. Jim Dunnam, Rep. Garnet Coleman, and Rep. Trey Martinez-Fischer (Source). Rep. Martinez-Fischer also spoke at the event, telling the crowd it's time to pay less attention to platitudes, and more attention to the beatitudes.

After a fun set from Marcia Ball and her band, longtime local hero and "America's #1 populist" Jim Hightower gave a rousing introduction to Senator Edwards, who took the stage to thunderous applause from the crowd. Senator Edwards began by telling the crowd we must immediately end the war in Iraq, and that in his first day in the White House he would close Guantanamo Bay.

The overall theme of Edwards' speech focused on how America needs to lead again, and how we have left to many people behind -- both nationally and globally -- over the past six to seven years. Specifically, Edwards addressed the following areas:

  • Climate change - Chastising President Bush's shallow calls at the G8 summit, Edwards said we must reduce our own emissions by 80% by 2050, invest more dollars in carbon sequestration, and not allow a single new coal plant to be built anywhere in this country.
  • Poverty - Edwards said the U.S. must take a lead in ending poverty at home and abroad. He noted that over 37 million Americans live in poverty, and that he's done work at the poverty center in North Carolina to fight against poverty in America.
  • Health care - Edwards laid out his health care plan, which he states (and Obama agreed in the most recent debate) is the only completely universal health care plan. Mental health care should be treated just as regular health care, and Americans should be able to "take their health insurance with them" wherever they live.
Edwards also spoke briefly about the issues of education, torture, and an active participatory democracy throughout the country. Overall, it was a very well-attended, exciting event.

Thanks for the pics (4.60 / 5)
I was there and I could hear him, but wasn't close enough for a good picture.

Imagine a world where the US leads once again.  Imagine the US spending the billions we're spending in Iraq educating and feeding the world, including our own in the US who go hungry.

Lets send the world micro loans instead of bomblets.

Good short speech.

Wish I could rate this post higher (5.00 / 1)
But all I had was 1-3.  I am new, so I don't have the 5 range.

Anyway, great pics.

Other pics on the Edwards Evening News at the Daily Kos by Machka, who also lives in Texas and attended the event.

Hey Benny! (4.00 / 2)
Imagine running into you here! =) Thanks for the plug on my pics - I figured that there were already so many pictures and accounts out there, mine would just be after-thoughts.

This was almost the perfect Progressive Rally for Texas (5.00 / 3)
I'm a Texan by birth and lived most of my years in Texas.  I don't now, but still have an infinity for my home state.  I have lived in Lubbock, Dallas, Denton, and College Station.  Not the most liberal towns, but the current Dallas mayor Laura Miller endorsed Edwards today.

(jeepers I had to type every character here)

I used to go see Marcia Ball whenever I could when I lived in one of the more conservative places, Lubbock, but many of us loved Progressive music out of Austin.

My first vote that I was allowed to cast for Congress was against the carpetbagger, GWB, who ran in 1978.

Politically, I wasn't active as a blogger until 3 years ago in watching John Edwards' articulate the beginnings of a vision to the country.  He has fine-tuned it since leaving the Senate, and I think it is to his benefit.

Liz Carpenter endorsed Edwards today.  She's a great eagle with older wings these days, but she was the champion of ERA, and I bet, with some counsel, it could pass with the best Dem President to make it happen with a little rewriting.  And that person is John Edwards.  I remember being in favor of ERA when I was in college, at the same time I voted against Bush in 1978.

I have a feelin' Molly and Ann were in spirit present at Sholtz's, cheering Edwards on, because he admits when he made mistakes, and he is the most progressive candidate in the field today.

Hank Gilbert endorsed him also (5.00 / 2)

The Statesman has video up of the full speech.

Thanks, Joe (0.00 / 0)
But this is only bits and pieces of the speech. Actually misses out on most of the better parts.

However, an Edwards supporter told us a full video should be up sometime tomorrow...

Looking forward to it - the Statesman cameraman also had a bit of a problem holding their camera still.

Is Edwards TOO relaxed? (0.00 / 0)
Some of the people I took to the rally and I were talking afterwards about his speech.

My thought was how at ease and natural he seemed.

On second thought, I'm starting to wonder if I'm biased and if that really comes off as some kind of weakness or "not a rock star"?

He was in jeans and button-up with sleeves rolled up.  He has toned down the hair.  His delivery has improved a lot with greater emphasis on issues.

For the record...I never heard him mention that he is the son of a mill worker.

Just wondering what everyone else thought.

Should he be a little more "Presidential" or does his appearance of being more accessible than Hillary or Obama help him?

I thought he was great (3.00 / 1)
and was dressed appropriately for the setting.  He does the official look just as well when it is called for.
