TX-Gov: Newsweek Predicts Bill White Will Win in 2010; White Receives Key House Endorsements

by: Phillip Martin

Fri Dec 18, 2009 at 10:02 AM CST

The Bill White for Governor campaign is gaining momentum as it heads into the final days of fundraising before the end of the year.

First, Newsweek predicts that White will win the Governor's race in 2010:

Our money’s on Perry as the victor in the March primary, if only for the anti-Washington sentiment swirling around the state. But he won’t emerge unscathed. As the primary takes its toll on his public image, doors open for the likely Democratic candidate, well-liked Houston Mayor Bill White, whose energy and planning initiatives, along with his economic management, have won him broad favor. By building a coalition of Hispanics, independents, and moderate Republicans from Texas’s growing, more Democrat-friendly urban centers, White will waltz into the governor’s mansion. But just barely.

Along with their prediction, they post the following video from PBS Houston:

Secondly, White received the endorsement of three House Democratic leaders today -- State Representatives Garnet Coleman, Jim Dumman, and Pete Gallego. The three issued the following joint-statement:

We are excited to partner with Bill White in his campaign to bring leadership to our state and meet Texas’ tough economic challenges. In Rick Perry’s decade of failure, our state’s budget has given away millions in special interest hand-outs when we should have been investing in sensible solutions that benefit everyday Texans. Texas needs leaders who put partisanship aside and let government work for the best interests of its people, and Bill White will do that as Governor.

Reps. Coleman, Dunnam, and Gallego released individual statements of support, as well. Each focused on economic issues -- an encouraging sign, to be sure. All three House Democrats have led the fight for public policy throughout the decade, and if they are coming out on White's behalf to challenge Perry on economic issues, then we should expect that -- at least at the top of the ticket -- we will have a true policy discussion on the economic challenges Perry has laid before the state.

Their individual statements are below the fold...

Texas House Democratic Leaders Endorse Bill White for Governor

Reps. Coleman, Dunnam, Gallego Issue Statements of Support

AUSTIN – Rep. Garnet Coleman of Houston, Rep. Jim Dunnam of Waco, and Rep. Pete Gallego of Alpine endorsed Bill White for Governor today. The three Texas House Democratic leaders issued the following joint statement of support:

We are excited to partner with Bill White in his campaign to bring leadership to our state and meet Texas’ tough economic challenges. In Rick Perry’s decade of failure, our state’s budget has given away millions in special interest hand-outs when we should have been investing in sensible solutions that benefit everyday Texans. Texas needs leaders who put partisanship aside and let government work for the best interests of its people, and Bill White will do that as Governor.

Representative Coleman, Chair of the House Committee on County Affairs, the Legislative Study Group House Caucus, and a member of the Calendars Committee, said:

Mayor White is a fiscally responsible leader that will partner with us to wisely protect taxpayer dollars and invest in services that will lay a firm foundation for our future. The mayor shares our values and our vision for Texas, and I’m happy he’s decided to run for Governor.

As a Representative from Houston, I've seen Mayor White, working with the Controller and a bipartisan City Council, prepare balanced budgets with surpluses to help Houston to weather the recession.

In contrast, Governor Perry’s response to state budget crises is to recklessly cut necessary programs, squander taxpayer dollars in privatization schemes, and place the burden on Texas families with higher tuition, health care, and insurance rates. We need a hands-on manager with business experience to cut state costs in times of declining revenues by finding efficiencies without compromising services.

Representative Dunnam, Chair of the House Select Committee on Federal Economic Stabilization Funding and Leader of the House Democratic Caucus, said:

Texas has paid the price for Governor Perry’s politics.  While accepting over $14 billion in federal stimulus funds to balance our state budget, he took a stand against assistance for unemployment insurance, tripling tax bills for small businesses.

His management of state agencies focuses on what’s best for his cronies and financial backers, not for the state.  Mayor White knows how to balance a budget, but more importantly, he knows how to manage an organization.  He’s managed the City of Houston through both fiscal and tropical storms, and he has been re-elected with percentages more than double Governor Perry’s 39%.

Our state government is lacking executive leadership.  For those in the Legislature that have worked hard to find common ground and care about the future of our state, we need a governor who is able to be a leader, not just play one on TV.

Representative Gallego, Chair of the House Committee on Criminal Jurisprudence and immediate past chair of the Mexican American Legislative Caucus, said:

Having spent years working on the state budget, I’ve seen the real effects that bad management can have on state government.

Pricing kids out of college is not a business plan for the future of Texas, but Governor Perry’s rising college tuition rates have been an added tax to middle income families.  The Governor and the State Board of Education are more interested in catering to the far right wing than they are in addressing the drop out problem.  Mayor White in Houston has shown what personal leadership is, not just through government action but in organizing his community and helping bring dropouts back to school.

Governor Perry has charted a course that doesn’t invest in the future of Texas.  Mayor White has the proven track record to work with members of both parties to seek and find common ground.  Mayor White is the leader that Texas needs today.

Not really news (0.00 / 0)
Those "key endorsements" are about as surprising as the state senators who lined up behind John Sharp for Senate. Aside from Hank Gilbert's strange endorsement of Shami, we already know that the big Democratic players are all behind White for Governor (good thing, too).

At this stage of the game, the interest in the gubernatorial primary race is all about Shami. Depending on who you talk to, Shami is anything from a common sense populist hero and exemplar of the American dream to a terrorist-loving rich guy with too much time on his hands.  (Both descriptions are absurd.)  Understanding who he really is, and figuring out his impact on Texas politics, is a lot more interesting than noting Yet Another Bill White Endorsement.

Awesome (2.00 / 2)
I look forward to your extensive diary discussing Shami.

Now, a very great man once said that some people rob you with a fountain pen.

You've already got it covered (0.00 / 0)
There's been a lot of good information about Shami on BOR, including his contribution record and his lack of voting record. I'm looking forward to reading more in time.

I was mostly reacting to the move to downgrade stories on John Sharp's run, and not to give much play to future events like Sharp's getting some obvious endorsements. That move makes good journalistic sense, and the same logic applies to White's (primary) juggernaut.

(But thanks for the Newsweek prediction, which was fun to see!)

That's Hank Gilbert.  Endorsing in a statewide race when you have your own to run against a much better known individual?  Idiotic.  And to endorse against Bill White is tantamount to committing permanent political suicide.  White never forgets these things, and is known to carry a grudge.

Farouk Shami - Fact Check (2.00 / 2)
Farouk Shami - Fact Check
From www.faroukforgovernor.com
"... and founded a multi-billion dollar company that has created thousands of jobs for Texans..."

Farouk claims (as well documented in many articles and interviews, and then repeated by the media) to be a Billionaire; however he is NOT listed on Forbes List of Billionaires - with his ego, he definitely would make sure that he would be listed if he just could prove it. (John Paul DeJoria of Paul Mitchell is listed as #261 with $2.5 billion)

According to his claims, Farouk Systems is a (multi)billion dollar company with thousands of employees; however Hoover's reported the 2008 revenues as $27.4 million with 150 employees and Houston Business Journal reported his revenues as $37.5 million - this is probably before CHI operations were brought to US - However, Farouk has always counted his revenues in the following manner:
• Not what he sold to the distributors (his revenue)
• Or what the distributors sold to the salons (with100% markup)
• But what economic activity the salons created by selling and using his products, i.e. salon retail (with another 100% markup) and service revenues (product cost 10%) - However, even with his calculations, it does not add up to a billion dollars (even if CHI sales were $300-400 million)

As to number of employees, Farouk has counted all the part-time educators (independent salon owners and hairdressers) who conduct training classes and work the beauty shows (scheduled by the distributors) as his "employees", since the company pays for their fees & expenses - these are temporary and very part-time contract workers, not full-time employees on his payroll

Farouk's management philosophy includes
• "I conceived it, thus it's done", i.e. making a decision tonight and fully expecting it to be implemented before he even talks to anyone - it works in a small entrepreneurial organization where he has the total control and it is his own money - However, how would it work in our democratic form of government?
• In his culture (and business practice) - "cousins" (anyone with Middle Eastern heritage) make no mistakes and family "walks on water"

Farouk can put up a fancy show - that is what he has been doing for living - Beauty Shows

P.S. Attending Quaker School does not make one a Quaker - maybe that is all what was available at the time (or even today) for quality education in Ramallah.

Wikipedia: "The Friends School currently serves as the School for the best and the brightest. It is well known to educate the children of Palestinian elites."

MilitantIslamMonitor: "Guilford College controversy Being Manipulated By CAIR -Quaker school tied to pro terrorist Friends school in Ramallah"

this is getting old (0.00 / 0)
i've seen it on pretty much every site Shami is mentioned.

I hadn't seen the information and I'm glad Longtime posted ... (2.50 / 2)
I grew suspicious of Mr. Shami being a multi-billionaire (or whatever) when I heard his partner, John McCall (whom I have known slightly for a decade or so), speak for him and claim they had been offered a billion dollars for their hair-care products company but turned it down. That's not the same thing.

While Mr. Shami seems like a successful and generous man, I am kind of amazed by Democrats going ga-ga over a complete unknown. Please re-read Huckleberry Finn and pay special attention to the part when the "Duke" and the "King" come on board Jim and Huck's raft.

There are a few real statewide candidates out there and many that are ersatz. By "real" I mean candidates who have credible, verifiable credentials for the jobs they are seeking, who have a decent chance of attracting support from beyond the Democratic base, and who are committed to running the best campaigns they can and mustering the resources to do so.

Of the 2010 Democratic statewide contenders, Bill White is very real, and he heads a list that is still much too short.

"The eyes of the people are fast opening! Fight on!"--Andrew Jackson

Best news of the 21st Century!

Bill White is the winner. (2.00 / 1)
Please spare us any Farouk "analysis."

Newsweek? (0.00 / 0)
Are they still in business? I wouldn't put any stock in any of their predictions. What does Charlie Cook or Michael Barone say about the race?
